Research demonstrates convincingly that bullying is a considerable problem and that educators do relatively little to counteract it, and that parents know too little about what their children are engaged in at school. We know that many of these children are the targets of harassment for long periods of time, often for many years. It does not require much imagination to understand the effects of going through the school years in a state of more or less permanent anxiety and insecurity and with poor self -esteem. It is not surprising that the victim’s devaluation of them-self sometimes becomes so overwhelming that they see suicide as the only possible solution. Bully/victim problems have an even broader implication. They really concern some of our fundamental democratic principles. Every individual should have the right to be spared oppression and repeated, intentional humiliation in school as in society at large.

When a human being experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as seperated from the rest of humankind, it is a kind of optical delusion of consiousness. This delusion is a prison, restricting us to our personal desires and to the affection for the few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion, to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in it's beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such an achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation  and foundation of our inner security.
