When a human being experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as seperated from the rest of humankind, it is a kind of optical delusion of consiousness. This delusion is a prison, restricting us to our personal desires and to the affection for the few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion, to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in it's beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such an achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and foundation of our inner security.
