It was a cold winter's night when a few friends huddled around the coal fire in the Roach Bank pub one Tuesday evening when the idea of an all conquering football team was first conceived. However it wasn't until many months later when one Tom Macklin sent a message via sms to Ric Murphy which forever will stick in the young man's mind...
"alrite mate, we need to get this team sorted"
With a blank sheet of paper and a dream Ric Murphy took it upon himself to bring this idea into a reality. He knew it would be a tough journey, but just two weeks later, a new era in sporting excellence had been born. AFC United was alive!
The main core members of friends, drinking partners, hangers on, and goons that we played football with were solid enough, but we needed some new blood to strengthen the squad. The nationwide search began, no grave would be left unturned!
With plenty of help from friends, family and Carl Lutkevitch, his uncle, Gary Brooks, Tom Macklin and others the club moved along smoothly on a shoestring budget!
Finally everything was in place, an initial squad was chosen, and on a humid night in mid-august AFC United faced their first pre-season contest in an interesting orange outfit, as their new strip hadnt arrived, against a first division side. After a convincing 4-1 victory the United board were satisfied that this was to be a year they would never forget!!!
