- Fred Hutchins's CONSOLIDATED XPY-1 ADMIRAL (1/72 - Scratchbuilt)

3.jpg

The XPY-1 and its civil counterpart the Consolidated Commodore may be considered as progenitors in a series of flying-boat developments that led to the famous Consolidated PBY Catalina of World War II fame. Fred Hutchins scratchbuilt this 1/72 model using Styrene for most parts, including Hull. The engines and props come from an aeroclub white metal set. This model won 2nd place in the Aircraft Scratchbuilt / Vacuform / Conversions, all scales category at the IPMS Stratford annual show 2006. Fred also built the models at Jan's Hobby Shop model museum.
