Mc DONNELL F3H-2N DEMON
Emhar - 1/72 - injected
Mc DONNELL Aircraft intended, with this Demon, to provide US Navy with the first carrier borne aircraft able of similar performance than Air Force fighters, but had to face continuous development problems due to poor reliability of the Westinghouse J-40 engine fitted on the early F3H-1 version first flown on August 7, 1951. Finally the Allison J-71 equiped F3H-2 entered US Navy sevice in 1955, with F3H-2M and F3H-2N sub-variants, paving the way to its derivative, the mighty F-4 Phantom up to early sixties.
Emhar released two boxes for F3H-2/F3H-2M and F3H-2/F3H-2N versions, for which main differences reside in underwing ordnance and unit liveries. This heavy engraved injected kit is of medium quality with some fitting problems, and I had to reshape the engine intakes inside surfaces in order for them to be perpendicular to the arc. I used Squadron book number 140 as reference material to build an F3H-2N seen p.32 of this book. One can see that unlike most fellow modelers, I'm not really keen on flashy and colored liveries. The model is handpainted with Humbrol Gull Grey and white, and decals sealed with Humrol Satin Varnish spray. The leading edges and walkways are decals and the exhaust is Humbrol steel rub’n buff.
