The Avro 549 Aldershot was a single-engined bomber aircraft and first flew in 1922. The only operator of the 15 Napier Cub engined aircraft was 99 Squadron RAF.
This 1/72 model is entirely scratchbuilt by Ian Fountaine apart from guns, scarff rings, and prop, all from Aeroclub. All wings formed from individual, separate ribs and spars, and skinned with 10 thou sheet plasticard using the biro technique to bring trough rib detail to the outer surfaces. The fuselage was constructed on a breadboard principle. The port fuselage silhouette was cut out of 20 thou plasticard using scale drawings as template and ribs added at various points along its length. This was repeated with the starboard fuselage and both halves were joined together. The fuselage was built up using a 'planking' technique. Cockpit and gunners positions were scratchbuilt as was the engine, undercarriage, and spoked wheels. Nose formed from milliput and plunge moulded. Rigging is invisible mending thread. The model represents a 99 Squadron aircraft based Bircham newton, 1924. It won Gold in its category (#10 - Military Aircraft - 1/143 to 1/72 scratchbuilt) and the Aeroclub trophy at Scale Model World 2007.
