Common Questions About Recruitment!

*What is the purpose of Alpha Epsilon Phi?

Whether you are a freshman overwhelmed by the large BU community or an older student looking to find a new group of friends, Alpha Epsilon Phi is an excellent place to find a home away from home.  AEPhi is a community within BU where girls create friendships that last a lifetime.  Alpha Epsilon Phi is a national sorority dedicated to helping women become the best they can be.  We prize individuality, encouraging each member to discover and develop the talents and abilities that make her unique.  But just as we value individuality, we also prize togetherness, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging that last a lifetime. When you're an AEPhi, you'll find there's always a sister to laugh when you laugh, to listen when you talk, to lend a hand and be there for you.

*Why should I join?

Alpha Epsilon Phi provides opportunities to girls that they may not find at BU.  We participate in the planning of philanthropy events over the course of the year.  Our Ribbons on the Runway event which raised money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation raised over $7,000 in 2005 and won the award for the Best Philanthropy Event of the Year at the Greek Awards in 2006.  We also provide the opportunity for our members to develop their leadership skills by holding positions in the sorority or planning sorority events.  Our sorority also encourages scholarship and requires that all our members have above a 2.5 to join AEPhi.  Alpha Epsilon Phi has a large focus on socialization with the Greek community, within and outside Boston University.  We hold many social events each semester with fraternities at BU, Northeastern, and Harvard.  We also participate in Greek Week in the spring.  We also try to show our support for the rest of the BU Greek community by participating in and attending sorority and fraternity philanthropy events.  Also this upcoming year, 2009, is AEPhi's 100th year anniversary and all members of Alpha Epsilon Phi will be allowed to attend the festivities down in gorgeous Miami, FL!!!

*What is the process of recruitment at BU?

The recruitment period which lasts for 5 days at the beginning of second semester.  It is a pretty time consuming, but fun experience!  On Night 1, you meet girls from every sorority, there are 8 sororities total, in little “parties.”  You’ll have the opportunity to speak to sisters one on one and find out more about the organization.  At the end of each “party” you rate the sororities and we rate you.  If there is a mutual liking, you go back to the sorority the next night.  Night 2, philanthropy night, you will only attend 6 parties.  Here you will have insight into philanthropy events run by each sorority.  Night 3, you will only attend 4 parties.  The final night, night 4, you will attend only 2 parities for an hour each.  As the nights go on you attend less and less parties, but they increase in the length of time you stay at each. The day after Night 4, you attend the Bid Day event and receive your bid, which means you have been accepted into the New Member Education Program!

*What are the time and financial commitments of Alpha Epsilon Phi?

New Member period is a relatively time consuming period, however, we require weekly library hours for girls to complete their homework.  We don't encourage girls to slack off in school, especially during this time.  We also have a Scholarship Chair who can assist girls in finding tutors if they find themselves struggling in school.  For sisters, there is no set obligation to how much time you put into AEPhi.  The only events that are mandatory to attend are recruitment, philanthropy events, and initiation.  But sisters tend to attend most events because we have so much fun!  We want our sisters to feel like they can still be very involved in the sorority and still do well in school and hold jobs, so we very understand of these commitments.  New member dues are $665 and $275 a semester from then on.  Keep in mind these dues are all inclusive meaning all events, dinners, t-shirts, and outings are paid for from these dues.  There are no additional costs beyond dues.  Many sororities may appear to have lower dues; however, they also require their members to pay for many things such as t-shirts and events.  For girls who are going abroad or wish to temporarily disaffiliate due to the SMG Core project, the sister is only required to pay the amount AEPhi pays to nationals each semester per sister, which is $150.

*What do New Members do during the New Member Education Program?

The new member program is a series of tasks and events that the pledge class attends to learn more about the sorority, get to know the sisters, and bond with their pledge class.  This is a very exciting time for the sisters and especially the New Members.

*What are the eligibility requirements of Alpha Epsilon Phi?

We require all entering new members to have a 2.5 GPA.  For formal recruitment in the spring, you must be a freshman or sophomore.  We always look for girls with enthusiasm, personality, and dedication, who we see as being excellent additions to our organization.

*What is the Alpha Epsilon Phi's relationship with other sororities and fraternities?

AEPhi always encourages our members to develop friendships with members of other sororities and fraternities.  The BU Greek community has a close relationship.  Alpha Epsilon Phi always supports and participates in other sorority and fraternity philanthropy events throughout the year.
