Adriane Howard
Costume Design and Production

Currently, I am working as the Craftsperson on Death and the King's Horseman at SIUC.  This production is being done in conjunction with Black Repertory Theatre in St. Louis.  It opens in Carbondale, IL February 28-March 2 with dates in St. Louis to follow.  Up next on my agenda is The Fastest Woman Alive for which I am Assistant Costume Designer.  My Qualifing Design will be The Full Monty opening in April.  Check back for pictures and updates on these productions.

Fall semester of 2007 I returned to school to obtain my MFA in Theatre specializing in Costume Design.  I graduated Cum Laude in December 2003 from Western Carolina University with a BA degree in Theatre and Speech as well as a BS degree in Communications-Electronic Media.

In the years since my graduation from WCU I have worked nationally in theatre and film all the while enhancing my costuming and sewing proficiency. I even returned to my alma mater, WCU, as a Co-Costume Shop Supervisor. During this time I was responsible for helping students with projects, keeping organized lists of costumes for shows, as well as finishing my own projects for shows. During Little Shop of Horrors I translated a beautiful drawing of a man-eating plant into a frightening 12-foot tall puppet as well as three smaller versions. The planning and teamwork that went into that production reinforced in me the true collaborative spirit of theatre.

The summer of 2006 brought about new challenges for me as I traveled to Durango, CO to the Diamond Circle Melodrama. I was the sole costumer for the summer season and every day I awoke to a new quest whether it be a Victorian gown or a costume that looks like a plate of french fries. This experience taught me that even what seems impossible can and will happen with determination and creativity.

Just before returning to my education, I happily accepted a request to work with WCU on their production of "The Music Man" directed by Terrence Mann. The short time frame for this production makes me appreciate my hands on education at WCU, film experience at Blue Ridge Motion Pictures in Asheville, NC and internship with Walt Disney World. The combination of these experiences gave me the ability to work in a fast paced environment and honed my problem solving skills.

Ultimately, my goal is to work in costume production with an internationally known company or possibly be involved in creating a new company with the wisdom I gain from participation in well renowned companies.

I can’t express how excited I am to continue growing in the costuming world.
