Ice Magic is True Magic!

Quotes

~There's no 'I' in TEAM!

~If you tell yourself you are a winner, eventually you will become one.
Until then... PRACTICE.

~"Even when you've skated the program of your life, its the feeling of teamwork that you'll remember. You'll forget the formations, the steps, and the marks, but you'll never forget your teammates."

~"Behind the media the hype the rankings the records There is a little girl who lived for the chance to skate Before you put on that dress tonight Remember that girl that fell in love with this sport Fell in love the day she touched the ice."

~"SKATING: It's the feeling you get at the end of a hard practice when you pushed yourself to the limit, the way the ice feels when you get back on it after a few months off. It's a part of YOUR IDENTITY, something you LOVE and something you HATE. A bond that NO ONE ELSE really understands, but that's okay, because every time you get out on the ice it isn't just you; it's all the friends and coaches over the years, all the practices, all the sweat, all the pain, all the tears, all the memories, all the laughter, all the "off" competitions, all the lifetime bests, and all the road trips. As individual as it may seem, skating is really a team sport, and even still, it's more than just a sport. IT'S A WAY OF LIFE."

~Your feet can learn the steps, but only your heart can skate them.

~SKATING...my soul, my heart,my dreams, my identity, my passion, my stress reliever, my anti-drug, my reason to smile, my freedom, my life... my 1st and only true love.

~Dont Compete like you practice, practice like you compete

~"It is said that figure skating requires the elegance of a royal court, the grace of a ballerina, the speed of a sprinter, the balance of a tightrope walker, the agility of a high diver, the endurance of a marathon runner, the coordination of a juggler, strength of a high jumper, the rhythm of a dancer, and the performance of a mime. Add that all to the unison of the Rockettes, the uniformity of a synchronized swimming team, and the teamwork of soccer players, and you've got synchronized skating."

~"The team on the top of the mountain didn't just fall there."

~"There's plenty of room at the top, but no room to sit down."

~"Never compare yourself with others because you will become vain or bitter, for there will always be greater and lesser persons than yourself."

~"First you're a part of it, then it becomes a part of you"

~"We trained ours off, so we could kick yours"

~"It's supposed to be hard, if it wasn't hard everyone would do it. it's the hard that makes it good"
- Tom Hanks "a league of their own"

~"People who never try, never fall; but they'll never fly either."

~"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small people who find it easier to live in the world they've been given, than to explore the power they have to change it.
Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.
Impossible is nothing."

~Don't think that you never have to fall, but think that the most important thing is getting up after you fell...so get up and try again!

~Grace, power, speed, unison. Lovely evolutions on a mirror of ice.
Amongst notes suspended from an invisible thread, a universe of emotions

~"A champion is afraid of losing, everyone else is afraid of winning."

~"We may need to follow the wake of those who have gone before, but what we do and where we go it ultimately up to us."

~"The character of any team is reflected in the standards it sets for itself."

THE CONTEST
The contest lasts for moments
Though the training'd taken years.

It wasn't winning alone that
was worth the work and the tears.

The applause will be forgotten
The prize will be misplaced.
But the long hard hours of practice
will never be a waste.

For in trying to win you build a skill.
You learn that winning depends on will.

You never grow by how much you win,
You only grow by how much you put in.

So any new challenge you've just begun,
Put forth your best and you've already won!

~"Would I trade skating for anything? Nope. Take all my money, take my car, but do not take my skates...Bruises will heal, the bleeding eventually stops, the bones will get put back into place, but being a part of something bigger than yourself makes it all worth it."
- Bananas

~"The key to happiness is having dreams; the key to success is making them come true"

SYNCHRO
Twenty pairs of steel blades
Sharp as razors they are made.
Slicing through the frozen water,
Moving swiftly past each other.

Twenty skaters on the ice,
Full of zeal and full of spice.
Velvet costumes trimmed in lace.
A smile upon each athlete's face.

Twenty noses in the air.
Made-up faces, pulled back hair.
Overhead the music plays,
The program in its final phase.

Twenty people move as one,
Until their skate is finally done.
Lines were straight and circles round,
Not one mistake the judges found.

Twenty medals, colour gold,
Shining, gleaming bright and bold.
They've worked so hard to get it done.
Indeed this team is number one.

TWAS THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS
by: fan

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the rink
The only ones skating were those who love synch.
Their skates were all fastened securely with care
In hopes that their boots would stand up to the wear.
While their friends were all nestled all snug in their beds,
The synch team was awake, medal dreams in their heads.
Synch moms in team sweats, and synch dads in team caps
Had just settled in the lobby for a long, gossipy chat.

When out on the ice there arose such a chatter
The coach sprang from the penalty box to see what was the matter.
Away to her synch team she flew like a flash
And opened her mouth and began to rehash
The runthrough the team had just done on the ice.
"The circle was decent, and the block was real nice.
But what in the world was that wandering wheel?
And why did your line look more like an eel?
And didn't I tell you to be lively and quick?
Instead, most of you looked kind of sick!"

"You must be more rapid, let's try it again!"
And she whistled and shouted and called out team names:
"Frasier, Crystallettes, Gems, and Elan, Hockettes,
Fond du Lac, the Jazz, and so on.
To the top of the medal stand these teams will go
Unless you skate perfect! You can do it, I know!"

As ice chips that before the wild Zamboni fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to their starting line the synch team they skated.
When their music started, they posed and they waited,
And then in a twinkling the coach heard the proof
That her team was good! No scratching, real smooth!
As she drew back to the boards and watched the circle go 'round,
Down the ice her team skated, their block tight and sound.
They were dressed all in spandex from their feet to their heads,
And their dresses were all tarnished from makeup and sweat.

A bundle of maneuvers they had choreographed,
And they looked just like Olympians as they started to laugh.
Their eyes, how they twinkled, "Soon we'll be done!"
Their cheeks were like roses, their noses had run,
Their droll little mouths were gasping for breath.
"We shouldn't have eaten those cookies! they said.
The hands of each skater were held tight and neat,
And they flew as they encircled the ice like a wreath.
Their dance steps were sweet, like a bowl full of ice cream.
Their legs shook from exhaustion, they started to scream,
"We're too chubby and plump, we must go to the gym!"
But the moms laughed, "You're gorgeous, and you're all much too thin!"

The closing pose, and a twist of their heads.
"The other teams sure have nothing to dread!"
Mourned the team. "Even after all of our work,
Our runthrough was awful, we all look like jerks!"
And laying their Kleenex aside of their noses,
They all gave a blow. And then the coach, she arose,
She sprang to her feet, to her team gave a cheer.
"That was the best program you've skated this year!"
And they heard her exclaim, "Now your practice is done.
Happy season to you, and may you always fun!"

BELIEVING YOU CAN DO IT
By Jessica McDuffie

As the day of our competition nears,
Remember the smiles, forget the tears.
Remember the times we've spent together,
Cherish them now, cherish them forever.
Next year it will not be the same,
Some girls lost, some girls gained.
Doing the routine one more time,
To fix that motion and straighten that line.
We've had many falls and lots of tough breaks,
We took our chances but knew what was at stake.
We are all exhausted and ready to rest,
But first we must show the world who is best.
Regardless of what the judges criticize,
Remember they weren't there to realize,
We sweated, we ached, and we worked all the while,
And we hide all the pain with a convincing smile.
So show them now what we have worked for,
Give a little extra where there needs to be more.
Smile and know that we have finished the race,
Regardless of what we win or place.

If I wasn't a synchro skater.

Some time ago there was a topic on SB about if we weren't synchro skaters. This is the list that everyone came up with.

2) I would be able to fit into normal pants (no skater butt or thighs).
4) I would know how to count past eight.
5) I would have beautiful, soft feet.
10) I would think that 20 people wearing the same track suit looks a little strange.
11) I wouldn't automatically catalogue the music I hear of every movie I watch as 'synchro-able' and 'non-synchro-able'. Ditto for music overheard in changing rooms, in ethnic restaurants or on vacation.
12) My brain would not automatically switch to 'find the error in unison' mode every time I watch cheer leading, dance shows, ballet, musicals, etc.
14) I wouldn't think of every location in town with the prologue of "yeah, that's near arena x".
17) I probably would not know how to slick my hair back into a bun.
18) I probably wouldn't know how to spell 'synchronized'.
20) The names of many towns/municipalities otherwise unknown would not be immediately recognized as 'synchro team town' in my head, and the list of past results and levels fielded would not automatically upload along with said town name.
21) The word 'Olympics' would not produce a sad little sigh of longing from me.
24) I would not own 30 million cans of hairspray and bottles of gel.
25) I wouldn't know any clever uses of the number 8 in words (sk8 gr8!).
28) I would never have developed the skill of locating items that actually belong to me from within a huge, jumbled pile of three other people's belongings in a hotal room.
30) My hands would not be able to grip things like a vice and not let go.
31) I would not be familiar with that spot on a person's shoulder where you can stick your thumb in and it make their knees buckle - and I wouldn't know what it feels like to have it done to me!
32) I would not know by instinct exactly how far my arm's length can reach (to the sometimes desperate tips of my fingers).
33) I would have no idea the extent to which the mind can convince the body to get out of bed at 5:00am, scrape the snow off a car, shovel out of a snowbank, drive through a blizzard, strap lethal blades of steel on my feet and exert myself physically - with a smile on my face - hungover and on 3 hours sleep.
34) wouldn't be proud and not embarrassed to own and wear in public the same exact outfits (not tracksuits) as 24 other people
40) I wouldn't have been pro at doing make-up for myself and other people at the age of 12!
43) Hockey players might actually be able to impress me.
44) I'd think "shoot the duck" is a hunting term, "axle" an automotive term, and "sow-cow" a mutant animal.
50) my video bookshelf would be significantly less empty
51) i wouldn't know about SB
54) I wouldn't know what a skate bag smells like.
55) I wouldn't know what that distinctive arena smell smells like. You could blindfold me and walk me into an arena and I'd know that's where you took me!
56) i wouldn't know how to tie up a pair of skates in less than 30 seconds when you are super late for practice.
57) I wouldn't know what it's like to go flying into hockey boards sans equipment at 30 miles an hour.
58) There wouldn't be half as many incriminating photos of me doing strange things with my teammates.
70) I wouldn't have about a million inside jokes.
76) I wouldn't think to myself "wow that would be a really good piece of music for my team to skate to every time I listen to music"
78) I might have learned, but never fully grasped that trying your hardest really is everything...and winning is only a tiny piece of the puzzle
81) I would be much more afraid to go out and just give everything I do...all the energy I have without being terrified to fail and be laughed at
83) Maybe I'd actually believe that hockey is easier than synchro
85) I wouldn't have made the amazing lifelong friendships I have
89) I wouldn't ask all girls when i first meet them if they know how to skate.
98) I wouldn't arrange my M and Ms into a synch team and make them do intersections on the table before eating them, causing everyone in the room to stare warily at me.
99)My work associates would have never seen videos from Worlds, poor souls, and they wouldn't know names like Haydenettes, Team Elan, Chicago Jazz, etc.
101) I would actually think that the ultimate skating experience is watching Michelle Kwan land a triple-triple (someday).
110) I wouldn't know the joys of being pushed and shoved around while waiting for the result sheet to be posted.
113) I wouldn't see lifts in pairs skating and think, "Hey, I bet our team could do that!"
114) I wouldn't know where to find every rink within at least a 100 mile radius of my home.
115) My home would not be covered in skating memorabilia.
119) would have never guessed that SO many skaters and coaches can't skate on beat or have a concept of counting.
122) i wouldn't sit through a movie and think "oh this would be good to skate to!"
126) I wouldnt have any interesting stories to tell my friends that usually start off with "and this one time, at a skating competition.. me and these girls on my team........."
127) I probarbly wouldnt have the scence of humor i have today ( spending time with 19 other girls really makes your mind crazy)
129) I wouldnt know what its like to get that adrenelane rush before you step on the ice.
131) I wouldnt have friends in places like Australia, switzerland and even other places in canada.
144) I would not get home from skating at 9:30 at night and be able to get up at 5:30 the next morning to do it all again
145) I might have a bit more respect from the single skaters
150) I wouldn't know that one music can be interpreted a gazillion different ways, with a gazillion models of dresses to go along with it. And that I might have to watch and listen to all gazillion inside the same weekend!
151) I wouldn't suddenly pay perk up and pay attention whenever someone said the word "synchronized".
160) Plan my holidays around skating competitions
163) My office desk and screensaver would not have pictures of our teams
173) I wouldn't know what it was like to simulate a synchronized skating line in a restaurant in Italy trying to explain what synchronized skating is to a waiter who doesn't speak English
175) Make lunches on a bed in a hotel room
178) Buy clothing that is fashionable and not practical and warm
181) I would not know the complete agony in every fibre of your body after the very first practice of the season, and your coach decides NOT to go even a tad bit easy.
184) I would not know the pain of having the end of your french braid shoved back up into your head.
185) I would think that spending $1000 on what amounts to a pair of weird leather boots and some pieces of steel was insane.
186) I would take offence to being smacked in the face, getting someones fingers in my eye/up my nose/in my mouth.
191) I would never be cold ALL the time!
202) i probably wouldn't know what its like to go in a rink during daytime (sun high in the sky) skate for 4 hrs, and come out of the rink at night (moon high in the sky)
203) i might have thought that skating is a wussy sport!
207) I would never have had to walk into a shopping center wearing a training costume and tights getting weird looks from passers by.
209) I would be able to turn around on dry land without doing a 3-turn or a crossover.
216) i wouldn't do my steps down the supermarket aisle...
221) people at school (after watching the olympics) wouldnt ask me if i could do a triple axel..
230) I wouldn't have National medals
231) The walls in my room would have pictures of hot boys instead of synchro teams, lol
232) I wouldn't do little hop steps everywhere!!!
233) My skates and tights wouldn't have little holes in them
239) I wouldnt have to imagine skating a program to every piece of music i hear.
240) I would actually be able to enjoy techno music without feeling like i have to do crossovers to it.
243) I wouldnt know how to coat my face in so much makeup that it looks like i had botox.
244) i would never had spent 10 min trying to explain to somone what "synchro" was
252) i wouldn't know how liquid eyeliner felt
259) -i would never have the amazing life long friendships i do now

399) i wouldnt have so much team spirit!!
400) during school, if people were like "i had to wake up so early on saturday", i would never have been able to say, "well at least YOU didnt have to wake up at 4:30 to go to skating practice!"
415) I would not have huge bumps on the inside of my ankles from my skates, and I would probably be able to lie flat on the floor without being in pain!
