Adelaide Rail Scene

This is a directory to my personal websites.

Each site deals with a niche aspect of the railway or tramway scene in and around Adelaide, South Australia. There are five websites in total.

H-class trams at the Glenelg terminus on 11 May 2005.

Bay Tram Twilight

Photographs of the final months of day-to-day operation of the 1929-vintage H-class cars on the Glenelg tramway.
The Adelaide to Glenelg tram line is now undergoing a major refurbishment ahead of the arrival of new Light Rail Vehicles, scheduled for early 2006.
These photos of the old Glenelg trams were taken in autumn 2005, and capture some of the character of the line before the upgrade started.

Belair Station Timetables

Belair station is on the main interstate rail line between Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth. It's an accessible & picturesque location to observe heavy freight trains passing through the Adelaide Hills.
The website gives the scheduled times & traffic details for all interstate freight & passenger trains between Adelaide & Melbourne, together with some background on Belair station itself.

AN loco 705 leads an Adelaide-bound freight through Eden Hills in April 1990.

Broad Gauge Memories

Photographs and commentary on some of the varied passenger & freight trains operating over the Main South line through the Adelaide Hills in South Australia between 1985 and 1990.
The photo galleries concentrate on the section between Sleeps Hill tunnel and Bridgewater. They include SteamRanger steam trains, which ran from Adelaide to Victor Harbor before the main line was converted to standard gauge.

FreightLink loco FQ02 and ASR's ALF23 head Adelaide to Darwin freight through Dry Creek on 5 August 2005.

Dry Creek

Dry Creek rail yards are on Adelaide's northern outskirts.
This is a good place to see:-
 •   Transcontinental trains to & from Perth, Darwin & Sydney.
 •   Freight traffic to & from Port Adelaide and Outer Harbor.
 •   Freight from the remaining broad gauge lines north of Adelaide.
This website gives the scheduled times & traffic details of all interstate passenger & freight trains passing through Dry Creek.

Historic tramway traction poles still in situ outside the Marryatville Hotel on Kensington Road.

Marryatville Junction

Adelaide's street tramways were closed in the 1950's (except for the Glenelg line). 50 years on, there are still relics of the system to be seen around the inner suburbs, including some which are heritage-listed.

Mr Goodman's legacy includes overhead traction poles (still used by today's utilities), bridges that don't seem to go anywhere and earthworks with no apparent purpose.
This site is a photographic record of these, organized line-by-line according to the old street tramway network.

Web address: Pending project. Will start late 2005.
