Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a very “untraditional” martial art. We call it BJJ for short. Unlike many martial arts we have no bowing, no kata, no bowing to your sensei, and no flashy moves that impress your mum but not your opponent. In fact, we place almost no emphasis on winning an actual street fight. Sure, everything you learn is going to hold you in fine fettle if you ever find yourself in an actual rumble. Sure this art is trained by almost all competitive cage fighters and competitive mixed martial artists. Sure it can be used to kick ass - but that’s not our emphasis.

BJJ is a lot like toy fighting with your dad – just a lot more technical, strategic and subtle – and with armlocks and strangles instead of noogies and wet willies. And as with your dad, the smaller player can still win. No really. No seriously. No, I know you’ve heard it before but this time it’s honestly true. It won’t happen straight away but we’re talking months not years here before you’ll be whupping larger, less trained opponents. Yes, even girls.

So, in the spirit of toy fighting, we’re very friendly, very playful and very welcoming to newstarts and old pros alike.

The US military train BJJ because it’s not only the fastest way to train up to being competent in a real fight but because it’s the style that’s most realistic while being least prone to causing injuries.

We train because it’s just hella good fun. (It also increases fitness, physical awareness, flexibility, confidence and the ability to stay calm in worrying situations. All that jazz...)
