This is Adam's Story....
"LEST WE FORGET THOSE WHO HAVE MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE..."
Bruno (Adam's dog) was the one that sensed 40 pounds of explosives in a close ranked line of recruits in Ramadi on January 5, 2006. Due to Bruno's reaction, my son Adam did not hesitate getting in the face of the Al Queda insurgent. Adam was so close to the insurgent, that when the detonation occurred, Adam saved the lives of two of his best friends, among others. Adam's body caused the shrapnel scatter to go left, right and also forward; not to the rear. His buddies were behind and to the right and left of him.
When the Marines came to my door on the night of January 5, 2006, they told me (from what they were told), that Adam died due to extreme upper torso trauma. They also told me that 40 pounds of explosives (approximately) were detonated. My mind at that point only thought that Adam was blown to pieces.
At the funeral home at Arlington, Adam had an open casket. I was the first to visit him the day before the viewing. As I approached, I was surprised that Adam was perfect; his hair, nose, chin lips, etc. It was all due to the fact that Adam was so close to the insurgent, that he absorbed the concussion, causing a deflection in the direction of the ball bearings. The concussion basically drained his body of all fluids, and then died immediately (hopefully).
Bruno started raising hell with the Iraqi's and then lay upon the chest of my son, to further protect him from additional harm.
Being at Adam's side, Bruno was wounded with bearings in his left side, and was medivaced to Al Asad Airbase in Al Anbar province. He is back on active duty in Iraq. Bruno may be 6-7 years old at present and still has years to go before he retires. Many have asked us about adopting Bruno, but time will tell. Bruno would eat our dogs for lunch.
For that last split second of his life, Adam knew what was coming, and what he was giving; but in reality, that was what Adam was all about. I know that is what Adam was thinking, based on the circumstances and his character. That is why I have always remained strong. Adam always had “Steel Balls”.
I'll always be so proud of him...
Leigh S. Cann, Adam's father

Just remember in the winter, far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed, that with the sun's love,
in the spring becomes The Rose ...
