Keisuke Yamato
The main male character of the series, only son of the Yamato family. Has stayed at the national bronze level for 100m freestyle during all three years of middle school. Has a rival in Yuuji Serizawa, the national gold medallist, and idolises Hiroki Nakanishi, the record-holder. A quiet and unassuming person who doesn't like to brag or test his limits, but always thinks before he acts.
Ami Ninomiya
The main female character of the series. A friendly, extroverted girl who likes to see everyone do their best. A gymnast-turned-diver at the beginning of the series, who attracts a lot of male attention. Bears a grudge against the Yamato family, personified in Keisuke, for the ruination and death of her grandfather. Has a close friend and older brother in Hiroki Nakanishi.
Hiroki Nakanishi
The Japanese record-holder for 100m & 200m in freestyle - fastest swimmer in Japan. A college student, who is the object of hero-worship for all high school swimmers, including Keisuke Yamato and Yuuji Serizawa. A close family friend of Ami Ninomiya, whom she treats as an older brother. Is the first to voice out recognition of Keisuke's potential for growth.
Kazuaki Seki
A freshman in the same year as Keisuke, and a third-dan at karate. One of the group of five dormmates that Keisuke belongs to. Is interested in pursuing Ami Ninomiya romantically, and joins the swimming club because of her, even though he doesn't know how to swim. A rather hot-tempered and abrasive character, who is likable nevertheless. Rooms with Kyotaro Kitano.
Kyotaro Kitano
One of the group of five dormmates that Keisuke belongs to. A butterfly-stroke swimmer who joins the swimming club at the same time as Keisuke. Very strong and well-built, and also extremely intelligent. Acts calmly and wisely in most cases, though slightly perverted. Likes to make fun of Narita-san. Rooms with Kazuaki Seki.
Takeshi Ogata
One of the group of five dormmates that Keisuke belongs to, and the star of the baseball team. Has had a crush on Ami Ninomiya since they attended the same middle school. Ambitious and slightly arrogant, his dream is to enter Koshien. Is the object of affection for Rieko Kinoshita. Rooms with Masaru Kume.
Masaru Kume
One of the group of five dormmates that Keisuke belongs to. Belongs to the track-and-field team, specialising in shotput. Extremly strong, but also overweight and lacking in stamina. Likes to eat and chase after girls. Rooms with Takeshi Ogata, and conspires with Rieko Kinoshita.
Rieko Kinoshita
A friend of Ami Ninomiya, who belongs to the tennis club. Has a one-sided crush on Takeshi Ogata, and pays Masaru Kume to take pictures of him. Forms a trio of girl friends with Ami and Mie Shimada.
Mie Shimada
Ami's roommate and close friend. Forms a trio of friends with Ami and Rieko Kinoshita, and generally acts as a listening board for Ami to talk to. Occasionally pairs off with Kyotaro Kitano whenever there are group activities involved.
Kaori Koyanagi
Inter-high silver medallist for the high dive, and Ami's main rival. Has a grudge against Keisuke too, for a embarrassing personal incident in the past. Rather arrogant and tends to have a loud mouth. Attends a different school, but uses the Eisen High School's indoor pool for practice. The girlfriend of Yuuji Serizawa.
Yuuji Serizawa
The national gold medallist for the inter-high freestyle, touted as the next great swimming sensation after Hiroki Nakanishi. Is an admirer of Hiroki Nakanishi as well, and accepts his occasional advice. Keisuke's greatest rival in the high school swimming arena. The boyfriend of Kaori Koyanagi.
Narita-san
The "ogre" of the boarding committee at the Kamisagi dorms, where the boys stay. A senior to Keisuke and the others, who insists that he be addressed with respect. A braggart and bully who is intimidated by the five freshman. Tends to act as comic relief, and is usually made fun of by Kyotaro Kitano.
Ami's Father
The head of the Ninomiya family and chainstores, who bears a strong grudge against the Yamato family. Shouts out "Death to the Yamatos!" every night before bed. Is a third-dan in judo. Takes a liking to Keisuke initially, when he meets him under a false identity. Is very protective over Ami, and wants to arrange a marriage with her to Hiroki Nakanishi.
Keisuke's Father
A rather useless flirt, who likes to hit on young girls, despite already having a family. Has been quite soundly defeated in business by the Ninomiya family, despite all that his father has done. Plans to leave the final outcome of the business rivalry in Keisuke's more capable hands.
Ooba
An old man that Keisuke and Ami meet on their first date, that strikes faint memories in both of them. An aikido instructor at his own dojo, who was friends with both the Yamato and Ninomiya grandfathers. Used to take care of Keisuke and Ami when they were young.
Coach Furuya
Keisuke's swimming coach at Eisen High School. Constantly pushes Keisuke to do better at freestyle. Has a secret mutual liking with Ami's diving coach.
