Summary:
When Shichimi's mother dies, she gives him a walnut and tells him to bring it to the Karakuri Tenements in Edo. There, he is surprised to find that he has six other siblings, all living together, all with different mothers but sharing the same father. Unbeknownst to them, their father is really the Shogun of the country, but for reasons unrevealed he has chosen not to let them know. As political and domestic events start to heat up, the siblings decide to go on a pilgrimage together to visit their mothers' graves, learn more about each other, and hopefully find out who their father really is.

Review:
Niji-Iro Togarashi is probably the most radically-different out of all Adachi's mangas, in terms of setting. While Adachi firmly insists that it is set in the distant future on another world, it strongly resembles historical Japan. With a cast of characters that are quickly established, Adachi sets out to draw the interactions between the different siblings as they travel together. Foreshadowing of the plot is quite clearly laid out and easy to see, but nevertheless it is an entertaining read. The relationship between Shichimi and his younger sister Natane is especially enjoyable.

Niji-Iro Togarashi Characters

Niji-Iro Togarashi Characters

Shichimi Shichimi
The main male character of the series. At 15 years old, he is the fourth of the seven siblings. Kind, brave and rather laid-back, he was raised as a firefighter, and is quite skilled in the use of a hatchet. He is the last of the siblings to lose his mother, and is quite irritated with his father's irresponsibility, vowing not to accept any money or favours from him.

Natane Natane
The only girl in the Karakuri Tenements. At 13 years old, she is the fifth oldest there, and takes care of the younger two brothers Chinpi and Sanshou. Has a rather fiery personality, and tends to get irritated with Shichimi at times, refusing to acknowledge him as an older brother. Has a special liking for Asajirou, the second oldest, and was trained by him in the art of the sword.

Goma Goma
The eldest of the siblings, at 22 years old. A professional entertainer and comedian, he isn't as physically-fit as most of his younger siblings. Gets along very well with Keshi, and often plays board games with him. He is a wise and stable influence on the family, though it isn't obvious.

Asajirou Asajirou
The second-born sibling, 20 years of age. He is a genius swordsman - the youngest person to master the Haniwa-style sword technique, but aspires to be a travelling artist instead. He was absent when Shichimi first arrives at the tenements, and only catches up to the rest of the family later. Also has the ability to occasionally sense the future.

Keshi Keshi
The third oldest sibling at 18 years of age, he was raised in a temple for a few years after his mothers death. Strong and skilled in the use of the staff, he is about an even match for Shichimi when they spar. Has a marked preference for drinking alcohol, and is an expert gambler. Gets along very well with Goma, who shares a lot of the same tastes.

Chinpi Chinpi
The second-youngest of the siblings, 10 years old. He is a genius inventor and scientist, often making both useful everyday household items and advanced weaponry for his siblings. A sensitive young boy, who loves his siblings very much and clings to them after his mother's death.

Sanshou Sanshou
The youngest of the siblings, and the son of a genius ninja. At only 3 years old, he is able to pull off feats that surpass much older practitioners of the art. Nevertheless, he still acts and is treated very much like the baby of the family, playful and mischievous. Often plays in secret with Hanzo, the ninja assigned to protect the family.

Hanzo Hanzo
The spy and ninja assigned to protect the company of siblings as they travel. He works directly under Lord Hiro, and is part of the Fuuga ninja clan, protectors of the shogunate. Disguises himself as a travelling tobacco merchant, and eliminates threats to the siblings' safety unknown to them. Plays with Sanshou secretly, as they come from the same clan.

Landlord Hiro Landlord Hiro
He is the landlord of the Karakuri Tenements where the siblings live, and dresses like a common businessman. In actual fact, he is a high official in the shogun's court, and one of the shogun's closest confidants. He is responsible for taking care of the siblings, and sends instructions via carrier pigeon to Hanzo, his field agent.

Shogun Shogun
The shogun. Father of the siblings, and a master of disguises. He seems to be a harmless, playful ruler, fascinated by new inventions and discoveries. For some reason, he is deliberately hiding his identity from his children. He is also father of Princess Koto, his only (recognised) offspring, and brother to Lord Takamitsu.

Princess Koto Princess Koto
The spoiled, bratty daughter of the Shogun. She runs into Shichimi during an adventure in Edo, and gets into a mutual dislike with Natane when they meet. Likes to play with foreign weapons, and expects everyone to cater to her demands.

Lord Takamitsu Lord Takamitsu
Younger brother of the Shogun, who is conspiring to take the throne. Has a multitude of plans, involving causing misunderstandings between the shogun and the populace, and hiring assassins to kill off all possible heirs to the shogunate - including the seven siblings. Is the employer of Furon and Akamaru.

Furon Furon
A mysterious assassin who seems to have anti-shogun sympathies. Meets Shichimi early on, and forms a sort of rivalry with him. Is an expert swordsman, and is hired by Lord Takamitsu to get rid of his opponents, including the seven siblings. Is related to one of the siblings, but that person is not aware of it at first.

Akamaru Akamaru
The leader of the High Ninja clan, rivals to the Fuuma clan. Lost to the Fuuma clan for the protectorship of the shogunate some years back, and are now trying to prove their worth. Hired by Lord Takamitsu to kill the siblings, and has a personal grudge against Hanzo. Incompetent in the use of high-tech weapons of mass destruction.

Billy the Gaijin Billy the Gaijin
The sole survivor of a shipload of foreigners that Furon killed. The siblings come across him halfway through the series, and take him into their party. He practices every day to kill Furon with his gun, and has a slight crush on Natane.
