Kasumi Kishimoto moves in with her aunt, who runs a boardinghouse, in order to be closer to school. But when she gets there, she finds out that all of the boarders are boys going to the same high school. From perverted Shin, to friendly Ariyama, silent Makoto and cheering-squad Yuusaku, Kasumi gets to know them all. When Yuusaku recruits everyone into the baseball team in order to spur them on, Kasumi finds herself developing feelings for him, even though she has a boyfriend studying overseas in the United States.

Review:
Hiatari Ryoukou is one of the classics of Adachi - his first story told from both points of view. As such, it appeals to both genders, and is a genuinely heartwarming and often comedic tale of a developing romance. Character development is very much the focus of the manga, and snapshots of daily life and events are shown as the characters interact with each other. The romance here is quite subtle and understated, where feelings and expressions are often left to the reader to decipher for themselves. The ending is very gentle, and quite open-ended, which may disappoint some readers who wish for a stronger, more conclusive end, but it fits perfectly with the mild, smooth flow of the story and provides satisfaction if one can understand what lies underneath.

Yuusaku Takasugi Yuusaku Takasugi
The main male character. He is one of the four boys boarding at Kasumi's aunt's boardinghouse, and is an expert at cheering others on. He has feelings for Kasumi Kishimoto, and is the initial object of affection for Keiko Seki too.

Shin Mikimoto Shin Mikimoto
The resident long-haired pervert, playboy and show-off at the boardinghouse. He is also a talented sportsman, and joined the baseball and tennis teams to be closer to Keiko Seki, whom he likes. He is forever on the lookout for cute girls and peeping opportunities.

Takashi Ariyama Takashi Ariyama
The big, food-loving boy at Kasumi's aunt's boardinghouse. He initially joined the soccer team as a goalkeeper, but was bribed with promises of food into joining the baseball team as a catcher. Friendly and kind to all, his qualities are not often remarkable, but one person does notice them eventually.

Keiko Seki Keiko Seki
A fellow student in the same year at Myoujou High, whom Shin first introduces to Yuusaku and Ariyama. She is the younger sister of Myoujou High's baseball ace pitcher, Masato Seki, and joins the baseball team as a manager as a result of Yuusaku's persuasion. A very shy and gentle girl, she has a crush on Yuusaku, and is constantly pursued by Shin.

Masato Seki Masato Seki
Myoujou High's ace pitcher, he is senior to the others, and the older brother of Keiko. He is impressed by Yuusaku's determination to cheer for the team, and asks him to recruit stronger members for the baseball team in order to have a chance to go to the Nationals at Koshien.

Katsuhiko Muraki Katsuhiko Muraki
Kasumi's boyfriend, he was studying in the States during the early parts of the series, but eventually returns halfway through. A strong, talented man, he seems to be Kasumi's ideal. But he views the growing relationship between Kasumi and Yuusaku with care, and realises that there might be more to it than both of them realise.

Makoto Aito Makoto Aito
The fourth boy at the boardinghouse, he is rarely seen and usually doesn't hang around with the others. Many times people forget about his presence, and are scared when he suddenly appears. He also has very thick glasses, and studies a lot.

Aunt Chigusa Aunt Chigusa
A widow of two years, she owns the house in which Kasumi and the boys stay in. She has a tendency to be easily flattered and a weakness for handsome men, but other than that is rarely seen.

Taisuke Taisuke
Taisuke is a stray cat that Yuusaku found at the beginning of the series, and adopted. He is jointly taken care of by Yuusaku and Kasumi, and sometimes causes shared romantic moments as a result.
