Written Theft Definition

The act of stealing written work of any form. This includes copying and pasting text or copying it out again by hand. Plagiarism is involved when one person's written work is passed of as another's.

Stealing ideas in written form still counts. It is still someone's creative thought put into words and although it is difficult to prove who an idea belongs to, it should not be stolen. For instance, if someone creates a work of fiction and another person takes the idea and modifies it slightly, it is still called stealing. In such a case, the person should get permission to use the idea first as with any written art form one wishes to make any use of.

Content Theft Definition

The act of stealing written content of a website. Content mainly includes the main bulk of text on a page. Theft of this content can be seen as copyright infringement, but only when the content is stated somewhere on the page as copyrighted.

Stealing Locations

Fan Fiction.net
A site for Fan Fiction artists to host and receive reviews on their stories and poetry. People can simply copy text from a user's member area and paste the story or poetry into their own account or a website.

Fiction Press
A similar website to FanFiction.net but more general and for a wider age group. Stealers can take and reproduce content in the same way.

Wikipedia
A massive online multilingual encyclopedia. This site allows the public to edit the content of almost all articles published, however the changes are moderated. Like with the above sites, content can be stolen from the site and can host stolen work. Cases of theft from websites in order to paste it on Wikipedia happens a lot more however because it is such an open and editable site.

Every website on the Internet that contains written content is liable to be stolen by someone.
Do not be fooled by thinking any code you add to your website will stop people stealing your written work and content.

Theft Prevention

Free Plagiarism finding Software

Once you copy suspected stolen work into the search area, it will search through websites to find a match, like a search engine. However, it is more powerful than a search engine because it searches for bulk text and not a few key words. The "Publisher's Description" in the following link explains more about this.

Disable Right-Clicking

Follow this free tutorial and don't forget to keep the credits intact:

Converting Text To Images

If you have a small amount of text, you can convert it into an image by using the text tool in Microsoft Paint or other image editing software. This way, your written work is less likely to be stolen and written out again as this takes time. However, depending on the persistence of the stealer and the actual content, stealers may just steal the image.

Tutorials On Reporting Stolen Written Art

If you are serious about your work and feel strongly about not wanting it to be stolen, the best thing to do is not post your work in a public Internet location. The second best thing to do is make sure your work is copyrighted. It will be a whole lot easier to try and prove the work is yours if you have it copyrighted.

You will most likely need proof that the stolen written work is yours in order to get it removed from a stolen location which provides a service, for example Wikipedia or Fan Fiction.net.

Before reporting stolen work, first try to contact the person who stole it. In a lot of cases, this is more likey to get a response. If you are ignored or the person refuses to take down your work it is best to try submitting a report if possible.

Fan Fiction.net Tutorial

To report a stolen fiction work, it is best to contact the person who re-submitted it.
1. First click on their userpage (this will appear as their name in a blue link).
2. First look for a link next to "email" and contact them about it this way.
3. If they have not provided an email, choose the Contact link option. This will allow you to send a private message.
You must be registered to do these options.

Follow the same instructions for the Fan Ficiton.net tutorial, they are exactly the same format.

Wikipedia Tutorial

If you see some content you are sure belongs to a webmaster, check to make sure again then consdider editing the article yourself in order to add a credit and a link under the text. To edit a Wikipedia article, click the "[edit]" link which appears on the right hand side of a section title. Some articles do not provide this feature due to too much abuse to the page.

However, it may be that the website you saw the text on actually stole content. Also, the webmaster themself may have added it from their site onto Wikipedia and did not add their own credit.

Do not delete any content as this could be a mistake.

Tutorial On Reporting Stolen Website Content

As the Tutorials On Reporting Stolen Written Art section mentions, always copyright your website content.

What to do if you find your work copied onto another website:

Try to contact the author using an email link on the site somewhere. If this is a serious case of plagiarism and you cannot find a form of contact, try contacting the website host if the person uses one. For example if the person's site is freewebs.com/sitename or similar you could try to contact Freewebs.com about this issue.
