Video Theft Definition

The act of taking video(s) in any format and re-uploading them to another public location without the original owner's permission.

Stealing Locations

Common places where people steal and host videos are:

Video Theft Prevention

Anti-Theft Messages

Make it known you don't want thieves to steal your videos by writing messages near where your videos are hosted.

Identification On The Video's Frames

You can use a movie-making program to add your name/website location of video on your actual video frames.
Windows Movie Maker is a free program you can use in order to do this. It comes with Windows Service Pack 2 or can be downloaded from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

With Movie-Maker, follow these instructions to add watermarks to your video:

1. In the program, go to: "Tools" then "Titles and Credits..."
2. Within this section you can add your name, URL of a website/video hosting account it came from on each and every frame in your video. You can also add credits at the end.

It is suggested you add the watermark near to the center and make it slightly transparent. Better Movie Making software users can sometimes block out parts of the video which could include your watermark.

Disable Downloads

Some hosts allow you to disable the option of downloading your videos. You can offer video streaming instead. However, video streaming takes up a lot of bandwidth.

Video Warehousing

Warehousing videos means hosting large quantities of them publicly. The people that do this usually host the stolen videos in places such as YouTube, Photobucket, Putfile and sometimes their own website hosts.

Video Ripping

Ripping can be another meaning of stealing but it can also mean any form of modifying/editing stolen videos. This is commonly done to make a music video or Anime Music Video (AMV.)

Examples:

This process is done by:

1. Downloading a video without permission.
2. Opening it in a video-editing program such as Windows Movie Maker.
3. Using the program to cut some frames out and add others.

If you watermark your own videos, it makes the theif less inclined to steal the video and re-use it because it has writing over the top.

Audio Theft Definition

The act of downloading and re-uploading audio files or music files to another public location without a licence or the original artist's permission.
Audio files include any recordings made for example general music files and voice recordings.

Audio Stealing Locations

Common places where people steal and host audio files are:

  • File sharing peer-to-peer programs such as Bittorrent, Kazaa, Limewire, Ares, Emule etc.
  • Putfile: http://www.putfile.com/
  • Search engine audio file searches: Google, Yahoo, MSN, Altavista etc.
  • Websites and webhosts.
  • Any Online Message Board in audio-related threads/topics.

Audio Theft Prevention

Audio Watermarking

If you have a microphone and digital recording device such as the record function of an MP3 Player, you can state your name and original location of the file in a recording. This can be added to your audio file at the beginning or end as an "Audio Signature" on your work.

Anti-Theft Messages

You can make it known you don't want thieves to steal your audio and music files by writing messages near where your videos are hosted. The best thing to do is not upload them at all if you don't want them stolen but instead you can at least write messages.

Tutorials On Reporting Audio Theft

Peer-to-peer Programs Tutorial

To get a stolen audio file removed from the sharing location is difficult because of the fact it could be "shared" by many users.
The best way to do this is to try to contact each member who is currently sharing it and asking for removal using the programs.

YouTube Tutorial

Use this tutorial if one of your audio files was used without permission within a video hosted on YouTube.

Contact the thief:

1. On the page where the stolen audio content is being hosted, click on the member's username to go to their profile page.
Their username will be to the right of the video after the word "From ..."
2. Once you are on the user's profile page, look under "Connect with (user's name)" and click on the "Send Message" link.

Audio Warehousing

This involves hosting mass amounts of audio files on a public online location without permission from the original artist. The locations stated in the Stealing Locations section states some of the online locations that warehousing can occur.

Audio Ripping

This is not to do with using a program such as Windows media Player to rip music from a CD onto your computer. This is to do with using advanced programs to edit music and audio files without permission, for example illegal mix tapes.

Respect The Artist

Moreso than art and graphics, video and audio works are likely to make money for the artist/creator.

Proper purchase of a video or music album/single/file from iTunes etc. is a legid way to inform the creator(s) that the buyer is interested in their work.

Respect and encourage the artists and creators of these video and audio works by buying instead of stealing.
