Sandy is a small market town in northern BedfordshireThe town is located between Cambridge and Bedford along the route of the Great North to road London to Edenbugh The area is dominated by a range of hills known as the Sand Hills, and is mentioned in the Doomsday book where it is referred to as "Sandeia".(Sandeia: Eudo FitzHubert. 2 mills). This is a derivation from the Old English "Sandieg", meaning a sand-island.
Sandy was originally a Roman settlement and was probably an important trading centre and staging
post in the Roman era. An ancient hill fort, now heavily wooded and
known as Caesar's Camp, still overlooks the town.
Sandy is probably best known today as the headquarters of the RSPB. The Society moved to The Lodge, on the outskirts of the town in 1961. The Shuttlewoth collection is also nearby, around 2 miles south west of Sandy.

The buildings that house the UK headquarters of the RSPB are surrounded by formal gardens and set in an estate of forest and heath managed as a nature reserve. Visitors can follow trails around heathland and throughmixed woodland in the central area of the nature reserve. You may see the rare breed of sheep Manx loghtans, which we are using to graze the heath. The organically-managed formal gardens are also open to visitors. Please note that if you are traveling to Sandy by train that there is not a taxi rank at the station so pre booking a taxi is advisable
