It proved a struggle to get 11 players on the pitch………which seems strange but those there showed a desire to win was evident from the start of the game today – despite the result it was a good performance just a pity that we could not score!!
A Fast high tempo start seemed to catch the visitor cold, neat interchanging passing opened them up, but first it was Lee
2 nd half there was 2 quick changes Collins and Welsh introduced and immediately chances were again coming thick and fast, but we couldn’t score! However Bray levelled raised well to head in from a corner 1-1, here we go, Collins smashed a 25m striker which was saved superbly by Wilson at his expenses as he was forced off with injury. Then instead of pushing on it was pushing self destruct - Collins mystery throw saw Gilsen run clear from half way only to be denied by a superb save from
Abercynon surged forward it was Lee
Still best of luck to Aberaman AFC for their CUP Final a week Friday, they have had a good season and deserve some reward. Reserves finish the season v Dinas Rock next Thursday………well shall we start with the same 11 to reward those who played?? We’ll see init………….
18/4/07 Aberaman AFC 2 v 2 Abercynon Athletic (M. Jones, F Welsh)
3 Points again - this will keep the chance of a top 3 place up for grabs!! This game was over by Half Time, within first 15 mins there was a glut of chances,
Winder had 1 effort brilliantly saved before rebound smashed over, there was chances for Welsh and even Meredith tried an outrageous 35m lob!! But then the flurry came, Winder stole in at the back post for his 1st , his 2nd was quickly after as he just stretched out to bury a rebound from 8metres, other’s were still missing – the Hat Trick was cheeky!! As the keeper went to left the ball up to kick clear GW intercepted and rolled a cheeky goal past the keeper who was fuming!! The ref stated nothing wrong 3-0, Winder worked a bit of magic on the left wing before his cross was headed in by Collins for 4-0.
2nd half was a stalemate, passing become sloppy as glory runs was seemingly the main prize – failure to pass, or even attempt passes in certain parts of the field were causing any attacks to break down, but with the opposition poor – Taz left his goal, in went Bray and new legs came onto add some freshness and in final 15mins – 2 late goals, Welsh was sent clear again 1 on 1, the keeper parried, Welsh seized on rebound, but hit defender a 3rd attempt and it went in…..just!!! 5-0 and moment later
3 Points was the end result......but only 3goals to show despite ripping the opposition to shreds!! The youth of the Hirwaun based club was evident as large areas of grass was availble to exploit.....unfortunatly at times our final ball wasn't as good as it should have been but after 15mins the Home keeper was being kept busy, he pushed Welsh's effort over, and watch as Winder scuffed a few wide of the post, but Welsh was the brought down for a pen and Frederick, blazed well over!! It was a frustrtating day for the front pair who had cahnces but just couldn score and mid way through Winder's lofted pass found Davies flicking over teh advancing keeper. The Home side offered little attacking threat, but there was signsof frustration as Aber couldnt hit the 2nd and Winder saw the keeper tip his effort past the post as other shots failed to score. The 2nd did come, vai a diretc free-kick with the wall cowering allowing Davies to grab a 2nd.
2nd half the game was killed off when Moses capitalised and made it 3 soon after enetering the game, it was then domination, chances a plenty were created but finishing was poor, Winder had 4-5 good chances it wasnt his day, Moses played through late on but angle was against him, when keeepr saved from Fred, frederick smashed rebound - but was somehow adjudged offside..........there was some good football played with Meredith and Bray carrying the ball into midfield and a swagger that had been missing in pevious games had returned to the play. It was nice to see all involved seemingly enjoying playing the game!!
With a dissapointing turn-out due to work and injury, it was nice to see no arguing or bickering, players talking and encouraging, which helped with confidence and extends the unbeaten league run into a 4th month!! The 3 points should be enough to put us back on track for a final onslaught during April.
31/3/07 Gadlys A 1 v 1 Abercynon Athletic (Winder)
3 points are all that mattered - they didnt get them!! The signs were there on Thursday that tiredness was creeping in - but afew casulties and then others players failing to turn out resulted in just 11 travelling. Frustrated and angry the 11 could'nt find a spark and with Welsh taking a knock it left them without real pace in attack and in what was a scrappy game the boys found themselves a goal behind.
Gadlys had a few decent players on show but teh boys were confident they could get something and with Thomas buxxing around in the middle, he just couldnt spark the troops into life.......Winder stepped further forward in the 2nd half and he did grab a deserved equaliser but all aother chances were squandered and despite almost snatching a winner - the game ended in frustration!!
29/3/07 Miskin 2 v 3 Abercynon Athletic (F Welsh 2, G Davies)
3 points are all that mattered......the Reserves finding the pace a liitle difficult having had a while off and despite a brilliant start when Bray's 60 yard floated free kick was misjudged by a flat footted defence allowing Welsh 2 bites at the cherry before he despatched the opener. The game got a little scruffy with some hurried passing and lack of talking but it was still us taking th egame forwward, Davies free kick tipped ove, Fredrick shooting tamely at the keeper, but midway through Davies did grab a vital 2nd. Going into the 2nd half it was 2-0 and again within minutes Welsh had killed the game at 3-0, a few subs introduced and suddenly the whole side seemed to switch off - as 4defenders stood as Miskin pulled 1 back, looking tired and jaded Miskin pushed hard and Watts made a number of fine saves before again Miskin scored 2-3 with 25 mins to play.
A few changes were needed with GW dropping in to add experinece in the defence and Bray pushed into middle to ghet back some aggression, and it paid off - with Kev Watts injured Rich Allen introduced & he twice so headers parried, Frederick had two chances, one seemed a cert to kill the game but teh keeepr thwarted him......with Diego Woodford struggling badly with injury he was forced to leave the field and then Miskin again pushed, Thomas was drained but he was needed to make a vital goal line block and Watts in goal made 2 finger tip (Camera shot) saves. As Abercynon just about clung on for the 3 points. They climb into 5spot, 1 point behin Miskin but with 4 games in hand - the top 3 are a further 6+ points away but with games in hand & next 3 to teams in the lower half after 2 hard games this week they will be looking for maximum points in the next week. High light was Dean Bray -being told to mark the Miskin keeper in dying seconds as he surged forward at a free kick - Bray switched on and focused went and stood next to Watts in our own goal!!!
24/2/07 Plough Inn 2 v 3 Abercynon Athletic (C Thomas, M Jones F Welsh)
After nearly weeks away from football it was always going to be hard to get going - a much changed starting 11, but the win was the much needed outcome and despite a poor perfomenace the team still manged it quite comfortably despite the scoreline. But hey a picture paints a 1000 words.............so go onto UTUBE's website pump in the Club name and watch for yourself!!
24/2/07 Abercynon Athletic 5v1 Gadlys B (G Winder 2, F Welsh M Jones G Matthews)
After 3 weeks away from league matches it was nice to get back and try to make up ground on the top 3, with a very strong squad of 14, the starting team got the job underway and goals were flowing at regular intervals......which allowed all 3 subs to get on and state their worthyness for next weeks game. It was a one sided match and then scoreline should have been doubled but for several missed 1on1 chances, and some individual performances looking for personal glory, as a result the team suffered and with only 5 goals at the end of the season the teams failure to score more today could well affect their league placing. Both Neals at the back were quilty of missing easy chances as they tried to put their opponents tothe sword but despite it being 1 sided Gadlys stuck at teh task and should improvemnet from earlier in the season. Of the goals scored Matthews came foward to notch one from the back, whilst a double from G Winder took his tally to10 for the season and both forwards were again on target.
17/2/07 Jubilee Cup 2nd RDAberaman AFC 4v1 Abercynon Athletic (Marc Jones)
After 2 weeks off, it was a hard match for the Reserves to come back to, and with Welsh called into the first team it was a chance to have a look at afew of the "fringe" players to see how they would perform. The Cup gaives an opportunity for players to stake a claim and with Hartshon having the nod in goal & Ford starting in midfield with Bray coming into the attack it was quite a differnt spine. The players stuck to their task and created and missed several chances - however on the day they were undone by teh pace of the Home sides attack and a different class of finishing. The Lads felt agrieved with a number of decision made by the card happy ref (does he realise his mistakes cost players £9.00?) still it proved a worth while exercise and hopefully the squad can re group for the league battle.
27/1/07 Abercynon Athletic 1v1 Abercomboi ( F Welsh)
There was littel to cheer but for the form of Fred Welsh, who celebrated the birth of his daughter witha stunning goal in hios first outing since her birth. Unfortunately Fred's energy levels was not rewarded with a victory as despite being teh better team in teh first half chances were not fluid and second half a much improved display by the visiting side resulted ina deserved equaliser even tho it was a soft goal after gallent defending much of the match. The game was very tight, and despite the eagerness of subs to get on - an opportune moment was never evedent as the Home side did enough to hold on for a point which keepes them in 3rd spot.
13/1/07 Blaengwawr 0v2 Abercynon Athletic (Marc Jones, Shane Evans)
There was doubts on the game being played but it was the game was switched to the Ynys stadium pitch & with a stand in official the Visitors set about taking the game to their opponents and were well on top in the opening period, good football and gutsy performances were evedent, after a few chances whistled wide, the lead was grabbed with Winder threading through and Jones latching on to fire a cracker. Problems were again evident as failure to pick out passes resulted in good possession not getting a vital 2nd goal and 2nd half the Home side improved and put Abercynon under severe pressure at times.
The defence looked solid and stood up to the test as Blaen pushed to level the game, Cynon were then dangerous on the counter attack but and late on they sealed the victory when Shane Evans strode forward and hit a howitzer from distance to grab his first goal of the season in dramatic fashion. This was a very good win against a toug physical side and again proved that the Reserve side is now packed with players of a very competitive level..........with a strong bench and the first team missing 4 players the Club is looking very strong.
With a bit of extra training for some of the squad memebers - who knows where it could lead?
6/1/07 Abercynon Athletic 7v0 Plough (M Jones, G Winder 3, N Meredith, F Welsh, C Thomas )
There were smiles all round after an excellent team performance and a goal glut to celebrate the New Year. A Big Squad available a few players punished for their "no show" over xmas and the lack of bodies in training - those that day play - well the result and score line speaks volumes.
Taz back in goal - found himself a spectator other than a push midway through the first half - but again if truth be told despite the dominance in the 1st half the home side had little to show for it, other than a well taken goal by "frederick" - as chances went begging, despite good football this problem had been a persistent area of concern and at half time it was rectified!!
With the Head Coach watching the half time talk attempted to give the jolt needed and a few words to leading scorer
Plough did’nt know what hit them and there was more as chances were created with every attack - Welsh acrobatically made it 5-0 and Winder scored his Hat trick goal with another towering header for 6-0, Thomas on as sub showed he wants his place back with a gutsy 30min spell sealed with the goal of the game with an excellent passage of football from the Cynon defence to welsh who picked out Thomas' 80 yard run and he despatched in the corner. A very good entertaining game - the plough caught like a bunny in the headlights as goof teamwork by all - gave Abercynon 3 much needed points. Difficult to selct a man of the Match but the eay Frederick played 2nd half to bring others in to the game showed he can do more than just score - Plough remain in 7th as the top 6 break well clear and Abercynon climb back to 3rd.
23/12 Abercynon Athletic 1v3 Llwydcoed (D Bray)
There was not much to be disappointed about other than the obvious defeat.....the performance was excellent by the Home side, albeit they allowed the opposition 5 chances and they scored 3, whilst the 20+ chances the home side created where wasted, a sign of Christmas "spirits" perhaps?
There was a few noticeable absentee's but players were willing to step in and from the off Abercynon dictated play, used the ball out wide well and drove from midfield. Welch was running defence ragged and
2nd half Coed pressed a bit more and from a counter came their 2nd goal again sloppy passing, but they were penetrating through the middle..... a few changes again brought Cynon back on top and with 30 mins left all to play for, but more chances wasted, Fred kept pinging to the keeper, Frederick so another hit the post, drives from range were just off target, with 12mins left it was a striker on for a defender to try to get something - but straight away a clearance was missed 2 centre backs sucked to the same player, missed the tackle & he rolled it across to unmarked strike partner 0-3!! Mins later Sub Dean Bray scored with a 2nd attempt but despite the last 3mins of pressure there was no coming back!! It was a disappointing defeat but there was some very good football played and perhaps with a few of they boys getting the fitness back after xmas it'll be a more energetic showing.
Disappointed at Llywdcoed - after Kit clash we sorted out despite home side, they also stated afterwards they were coming to ours for food - then no sign of them. A letter for reimbursement will be shortly issued!!
16/12 Abercomboi 3v4 Abercynon Athletic (M
Two big games inside 2 weeks and still the Reserves show that they can maintain a challenge this season. The Visitors flew out of the blocks and “
For a few minutes Cynon looked shaky, but then With Thomas spraying the ball wide Evans found Welch we skinned his marker to neatly finish, then came a Collins effort straight at he keeper – he saved but minutes later the same type of shot keeper failed to hold and it squirmed into the net. Controversial 4th with
2nd half came the down side and a disaster for the players who are working hard to achieve something on a Saturday. A good attack within 5 mins by Home side found a striker bearing down on goal – Neal Winder went made an attempt to get a tackle in – just missed timed and conceded a pen. Disappointed but then a 40 yard run by a team mate to hurl abuse led to an “unsavoury melee” which again brings shame to the Club as witnesses were left shell shocked –as were other team mates!!
Both players involved did not see out the 90mins – the penalty was converted 4-2 and Cynon were now disjointed and the Home side in the ascendancy – but with Geraint Winder back in Sweeper the defence was standing firm – and soon Cynon again had chances – Frederick some how missed from inches, as chances went begging then in the final minute – Hartshon on as sub failed to clear and left Abercomboi smash a very late consolation to give the score-line a very unrealistic 4-3 finish.
The Reserves travelled to Aberaman Legion who top AVAFL Div1, the Home side with a squad of talented players assembled from around the valley was given a very torrid time, as the Reserves put aside last weeks disappointments and fought tooth and nail to prove they can compete with anybody in the division. There was some nice moments of football played by both sides in a competitive match with both sides keen to get the fist goal – it went the way of the Home side, a very harsh penalty decision which angered the visitors…..as an excellent Neal Winder tackle cleared the ball to touch and the attacker went over his legs!! The penalty was slotted home but only acted into pushing on the visitors as they attacked the Home end with regularity and it came as no surprise when the leveller came – the Fred’s again proving a successful double act as when created for the other to smash home.
There was to be no crumbling with experienced players in the reserves with Gary Collins looking for match fitness and a rejuvenated Geraint Winder the game was still in the balance they only surprise was it was 1-1 at HT failed to capitalise on some good chances. 2nd half was more even with some good strong challenges and both teams really trying to get the upper hand, unfortunately it was the Home side who scored the next goal and despite the resilience and hard work put in ‘Cynon simply did not have an answer left and a very happy Aberaman Legion were left cheering the final whistle.
An excellent advert for Div 1 of the Aberdare League.
2/12 Abercynon Athletic 1 -1 Osbourne (M
An helter skelter match – no official ref again but we played and should have won easily, but for a combination of poor shooting, and excellent goal keeping. The chances kep coming but it never looked like it was their day as Welch, Woodford and
18/11 Abercynon Athletic 2 -1 Blaengwawr (F Welch, M Jones)
An excellent win with the 2 Freddie's putting the finishing touches on some excellent hard work by the team. Agiana story of players not turning out without giving any notice, so Taz again had to shuffle the pack. The dissapointment led to others rewards and they again showed they are worthy and acn do the job asked. Craig Thomas returned from long term injury, he found it hard but he got through laot of work, Watts came back and Geraint Winder returned to the reserves and all was needed as a strong Blaen side went looking for the points. Neal Winder solid in defence and helped young duo Meriditha nd Evans to combat alot of high balls, whilst not pretty watch a deserved win. Pullman again made an impression but when injured Taz was denied opportunity to make a sub, as Ref Alun thomas was going to teh letter of law, he had not been handed a wriiten list and therfore would not allow 49yr old Geoff Welch onto the pitch to mark his return. Pullman empitomised the team spirit by playing through the pain barrier and then boys held out to maintain a helathy league position.
11/11 Abercynon Athletic 2 -2 Gadlys A (N Winder2)
A good hard worked point thanks to 2 goals from defnder Neal Winder. With 2 new signings returning to the starting team it was going to be difficult but after only having 7 players last week it was vital just to get out and play football. Wayne Pullman and Craig Vardon returned and filled in for absent players, whilst Lee Randal returned from a sabatical and tried his hand in goal as "longed" is likley to be out for a long while. All who did take part give it their best and deserved at least a point - hopefully a few more players will be back on the scene shortly (G Winder and D Bray has been temp. promoted to the first team) and all will be pushing for places so the boys with the shirts will need to keep performing - despite no goals from the "freds", its only a matter of time before they are back on the score sheet.
28/10 Abercynon Athletic 2 -1 Miskin (F Welch, M
An excellent win against the Division’s leader at Kick off having played more games – it was a hard fought victory and often not pretty, but after a number of players had failed to appear – letting the side down it was a very good win. The strike partnership of Fred and “fred” keeping scoring goals and they were a constant nuisance – the ref had a bit of a ‘mare – awarding free kicks for fouls in the box!!!! So it was a crazy day – Miskin for their part had the better of the 2nd half and pushed hard for a point – but last ditch tackles and blocks by Taz and N Winder in particular where rewarded when the final whistle sounded!
21/10 Aberaman 2-2 Abercynon Athletic 2 MATCH ABANDONED
Having come back from 2 down to level - Abercynon had the bit between their teeth and had wanted this match to continue but the ref influenced by Aberaman abandoned play due to the heavy rain – the match therefore will need to be replayed.
14/10 Abercynon Athletic 1 -3 Blaengwawr (
Hopes of a cup run were extinguished when within first 2 minutes a calamity goal was gifted to the visitors. Neal Winder with time miss-controlled and misplaced the ball and striker smashed home. Even more defensive mistakes followed and resulted in the visitors going 2 up despite being outplayed. Abercynon found it difficult to get the ball in the net but were over running the visitors – a melee broke out which upset the rhythm and Blaen were 3 ahead through another error. Welsh pulled 1 back and Matthews hit a post, as Cynon tried to get something from it but it simply would not materialise
7/10 Gadlys B 2-9 Abercynon Athletic (
Despite 0-0for 20 mins there was only ever one winner – after the failure of the Ref to appear gratitude was shown to their Manager on agreeing to ref, but Visitor’s blitzed 9 goals and it should have been 20!!! Welch played Matthews in who found space and scored the 1st, this after the strikers and midfield had all failed with chances, but as soon as the 1st went in the 2nd quickly followed Welch doing well to smash home, strike partner
30/9 Abercynon Athletic 5-2
Despite conceding an early goal –after a JR hand ball, the Home side came back with an excellent response and despite a few boys missing – still chalked up another 5 goals. The Visitor’s didn’t roll over and put on a battling display, which they should take heart from but Cynon’s extra strength and fitness was enough to see them win comfortably in the end with goals from G Winder 3 his 1st ever senior Hat-trick ?, M
23/9/ Abercynon Athletic 8-1 Mackworth B (M
Abercynon dominated the young inexperienced Mackworth side. A Few Changes to the starting side which ended losing last week and the response was instant with a Geraint Winder goal after 30 seconds – another 25 yard effort, goals where to come very quickly as Neil Winder on his return headed after excellent work out wide by JR – then despite a rash challenge giving Mack a pen, Cynon continued and with Glen Matthews blazing shots high and wide it was left to Marc
16/9/06 Llwydcoed 3-1 Abercynon Athletic (M
I know several players were disappointed, but you win & lose together – it’s the first loss its disappointing, but you got to work hard and want it more – not simply collopase!!!
14/9/06 Osbourne 0-1 Abercynon Athletic (D Bevan)A strange night at Pentwyn – Grounds man looked to be a no-show as the match was about to be called off he appeared, then despite both teams vigorously warming up – the ref sat in his car delaying kick off. The game eventually started quite scruffy with aimless kicks but after 15mins Abercynon started to get the ball down and created chances –
9/9/06 Dinas Rock 0 -7 Abercynon Athletic (F. Welsh 5, G Winder, M
League campaign started with a bang!! An excellent turn out of 20 players - some disappointed but hard work via training will see everybody given opportunities. A fairly strong Abercynon side started the match and last years top scorer Fred Welsh hitting 5 in the 1st of the season is a good sign of things to come for him, whilst Winder's 30 yard effort was the goal of the game. The boys still missed many well worked chances, so they can still improve but excellent start, a clean sheet and confidence.
Carnetown 1-4 Abercynon Athletic
Abercynon had a large squad of reserves available which is good news for the club - and in a local derby beat last seasons much changed 1st Division winners quite convincingly. Carnetown scored via a pen from Williams, whilst Geraint Winder's penalty attempt for Cynon landed in the car park - but that was closer than Dean Bray's effort when through on goal. Still friendly's are for trying things out and fitness and Fred Welch delicate lob put him back on teh goal trail, new signing "Fredrick" struck one and fellow signing Dia Donne rasped in one from 25 yards to add to Lee Randall’s debut strike. League starts on Sat 9th - so a good moral booster!!
