Abercynon Athletic AFC

The Pride of Cynon

Recent History

During 2004/05 Abercynon Athletic rose like a "phoenix from the flames" to lift the Cynon Valleys most prestigious, sought after Football title - the Aberdare Premier League Championship.  Remarkably this fete was achieved despite financial hardship, no manager and hardly any players just days before the season was to commence. In truth no one could have envisaged the story that was about to unfold at the once turbulent club!!

Following the appointment of Manager Lee Jones and the signings/return of a number of local based players, the club has gone from strength to strength & just kept winning games!! This winning habit put them in a strong league position and they remained unbeaten in 2004, however  a blip and fierce competition from local rivals – AFC Abercynon and Tynte,  made it difficult but Athletic inflicted home and away defeats to kill off both their main challengers title aspirations in dramatic fashion & culminated with a titanic fight at Grovers against Abernant (who were top) to decide their fate.  Despite falling behind early on, Abercynon was cheered on by a passionate crowd and roared onto victory with a phenomenal 2nd half performance. a game which will live in the memory of all who witnessed it and all that played in it, as the team spirit and passion was electric and it resulted in Abercynon Athletic being crowned Champions at the final whistle.

The Club successfully applied to obtain promotion to the South Wales Amateur League - returning to the Welsh Pyramid system in 2005/06 following a short absence which saw the club relegated from the Welsh League, forced to withdraw from the SWAL and only survived from its continuation of its reserves whom played out of the Aberdare League Div2 largely due to now Chairman John Horseman.  However, following rececnt promotions it has ambitions set on an eventual return to Welsh League status.

The Club is ambitious and with a positive mission statement laid out and after achieving promotion to the SW Amateur League, the club again re-established a 2nd Senior side in 2004/05 to compete in the Aberdare League Division 1.  Despite a young age and constantly changing playing staff the "reserves" continously improved in their first season of senior football, finishing last year very strong and taking points off the top 4 sides.

The club continued to make history - the SWAL 1st Division beckoned following a great start to the season, however with such a small squad, players injuries ( top scorer - Leighton Jones out from Jan)and suspensions made life very difficult and despite occupying the top 3 for most of the season - a few bad results and the imprerssive form of both Llanharry and Trefelin left Abercynon in 5th spot  and facing a fixture pile up!   Questions were asked of the players - did they want it, and how bad, a few additional signings and the mementum was back - some slender victories put them within touching distance of 2nd - but penultimate game defeat at Graig left the club shell shocked - winning, missed chances then in the last 5 mins conceeded 2 and missed a pen!!  It was all left to a midweek match at Splott Albion - a tense nervous match - we led 1-0 for a long time but 2 quick 2nd half goals sealed the win and the 3rd promotion spot - Rhydyfelin winners after just 1 league defeat helped us by securing the title with a point at Llanharry on the Saturday before.  The Club again promoted for the 3rd year in a row upto SWAL Div 1.

The Club is always looking to improve its playing staff in order to continue building upon recent history!  Any body is welcome at the club, as long as they are prepared to work hard and show commitment.
