NO Football in 2007-2008

Due to a number of reason's, mainly through players stepping into Welsh League and lack of off field support the Club has been forced to withdraw from the SWAL despite being given an extension ........this has led to the Resignation of Secretary and Manager Lee Jones effective from Sunday 19th August - he will work as Secretary for a month in order to ensure all matters are finalised at the Club,

PLEASE SEE RANT.........for further information.

Latest Information:

This Week :

SOUTH WALES AMATEUR LEAGUE WJ OWEN CUP FINAL 2007

Abercynon Athletic  0-2 Aber Valley YMCA

It was not too be.....after an excellnet 30mins we just could not score despite the chances, and some excellent saves by their Keeper Dean Wood.....they then took the lead, Prangley rose to nod in a free kick. They lead but just befor HT had Peter Ras. harshly sent off for two yellows.  We just couldnt take advantage and up against the best defencive team in the league we simply could not break them down and as we threw more men forward an error allowed a 2nd by Jenkins with 7mins left........we had no reply!!

It was dissapointment for all involved in the Club as it looked so promising with us dominating the majority of the 1st half, if the OPTA stats where availble the 90mins which show that we had three times more chances to score than the opponents.......yet failed to hit the net.  The boys gave 100% but in truth the strength of Aber Valley is their defence and they stood strong and frustrated us.  The Cup was theirs!

Everyone involved in the Cup run and league campaign can be proud of the season we have had........it would have been an excellent way to finish the season, but it was one game to far......the support on the day was great and the occasion was fantastic, having tasted it once it has to be our aim to get back next year and have another go!  Thanks to all the well wishers, the league, the Graig FC and all at Abercynon that had given their all for the Club this season........agh!! 5th May:

ABERCYNON ATHLETIC FINISH THE SOUTH WALES AMATEUR LEAGUE IN 5th PLACE!

The SWAL came to a conclusin on Saturday with Llangynydd the visitors.  The vistors sealed their Division 1 status last weekend so with no pressure on them, they travelled to us in  relaxed spirit and played their part in another entertaining game on Grovers Field, their attitude was travel up, put in 90mins hard graft and then PARTY!!  We can not yet celebrate the end of season with a Cup Final to focus on, but our form has been good and with a strong squad today we ran out comfortbale 5-2 winners as the players ensured in the first half that we stayed tight, focused and got 3 goals to kill the game.

The vistors from Maesteg came in their numbers and celebrated the end of season in the Top Club - fair play despit defeat they were in good spirits and consumed a few ales - and made a few friends!  Credit their spirit on the field and off it - that is what football should be about.

Our league season has finished very well - the boys put in a good performance to ensure that we climbed and finished in 5th spot, for a Club who has came from Div 2 of the Aberdare League winning 3 successive promotionsto get into this Division, it is an achievement for the Club, and one which I hope that we can build upon - starting next week with the CUP FINAL V ABERVALLEY.........

Can I just add our Congratulations to Cwmaman Institute for clinching the League title today, the Cynon Valley based club came very close last season, but this year despite tremondous pressure from Corus Steel and runners up AberValley, they held on and after 30 games finish top of the table.  I wish them luck with any play off they have to encounter - as despite winning one of the most difficult leagues in Wales they now have to endure a "winner takes all" final, when all other players are enjoying the sunny weather, with their cold cans and a barbie.   Again best of luck, the Club is geared for Welsh League Football and deserve the opportunity.  Despite AberValley missing out on the title, they should be really pleased with the Runners Up position and will be the team to look out for next season.   Congrats also extend to the three promoted sides.......I believe they all just missed out last season finishing 4th 5th and 6th - this year Trefelin, Tuberville and Llanharry got the 3 spots and will be competing in Division1.

This Weeks Matches upto 28th April:

Well another trip to Rhydyfelin this time it was a 2v2 draw but a  more scrappy game then previous encounters, tired limbs on both sides but after we took the lead  against the run of play through Howells sweet strike, we did exert control and came close a few times, before a poor decision to show straight red to Davies, neither side could believ the reaction of  the ref.  We hold out until 70th min with 10min- but fresh legs give Rhyd an extra spark and afetr Watts made a few good save he was beaten by a well hit shot.  Despite us looking drained we still fought tooth and nail and pressed play, Collins was rewarded when he robbed defender and slotted the ball to rory for a tap in.     Last mins after surving a bombardment it was a rare Harris error on half way line that set up a swift attack and Rhyd levelled from a very tight angle.   Nobody expected an easy game but with 10 men for 50 mins - 100% was given by all to maintain current unbeaten run.  (see full match report)

The Reserves faced Aberaman AFC on Thursday......and it was a crazy night of fottball as so many withdrew at one stage there was a real struggle for 11players, however starting strongest should have been ahead as L Jones & M Jones both shot over from 10m out, and a bulk of possession was undone when crazy Pat, caught Taz out in goal & resulted in a tap into an empty net - Pat had a good week.  But response was good as we threw everything at them, just couldnt put the ball in......until Bray headed level, Collins drive was tipped away by keeper, and then - 2 shocking errors - the first reulsted in taz pulling off a super save from Gilson, but he was helpless when Hughes gotr caught in possession.....1-2, Welsh missed a pen, Winder put an header over and it just was not going to be our night!!

Saturday the Club faced a very difficult trip to Caerau........missing 5 first team players thee game was always going to be difficult, but no one could imagine how difficult it was going to be actually getting there!!  Navigation skills of Gerwyn Harris took us all via Mount Everest it seemed and 2 cars ended in Nantymoel - still that said having gone a goal behind, the game turned when Behan was brought down when played clean through - penalty and a red card, Collins scored the pen to level then 2nd half 2 quick goals allowed us to saok pressure and hit the Home side on the counter and came away witha 6-2 victory!!  It was slightly flattering, although we did spurn a few other simple chances - so could have scored more. Credit Caerau as they kept going forward in search of goals, tried really hard, but big up to they way we defended and then sprung forward - Gary Collins grabbed an Hat Trick, and Howells another brace!!
