Aberaeron Bog Railway

    Aberaeron Bog Railway

Where I work, we sell, amongst other things, Loo Seats. One became damaged, and was about to be thrown in the skip when I had a very silly thought!

I wondered if it would be possible to have a working model railway running around the perimeter.

So, I rescued the seat from a fate worse than being used, took it home, bought a couple of lengths of ‘N’ gauge track and a couple of wagons and set to work.

By the end of the first evening I had a loop of track, and I could push the wagons around it with no problems.

So, next day, I invested in a loco, and in the evening I wired the track to a controller and spent the rest of the evening watching in fascination as the train went round and round!!! (I really need to get out more)!!!

Flushed with success (sorry) I then spent the next few weeks making the scenery and doing a lot of research on the internet to find suppliers of automatic controls as by now I had decided I wanted it to work all on its own.

Heathcote electronics seemed to be the ones for the stop/start/signal control so I ordered one from them, and after a long search, I found N gauge signals from Remtrak, also on the internet.

Almost everything else came from Old Barn Hobbies in Aberaeron, and with just one or two Ebay purchases, by the end of February it was as you see it today.

The scenery is made from newspaper soaked in flour and water paste, and formed over pieces of cardboard, randomly cut to shape, and then coloured with modelling decorative materials.

The story of Dafydd was the product of a wet Sunday afternoon with nothing better to do, and the vague idea that I needed to justify the existence of the layout by finding a prototype!!! (I am still not getting out a lot) !!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. I would be happy to talk to you.

If you would like to invite me to an exhibition somewhere, I will be pleased to consider any offers.

Oh yes, while I remember, I have just obtained another loo seat!!! So watch this space, who knows what might be here next year!!

Thank you for looking
