Abbey Light Railway

The Official Website of the Abbey Light Railway, Kirkstall, Leeds

Welcome

The Abbey Light Railway is a privately owned 2-foot gauge railway running for a quarter of a mile from our depot on Bridge road, through scenic woodland into the grounds of the historic Kirkstall Abbey.

Passenger trains operate only on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays 1:00 - 5:00pm (weather and passengers permitting) throughout the year, hauled by at least one of our vintage industrial diesel locomotives. Any additional open days will be advertised on this website.

Scroll down this page for the lastest news of whats going on at the railway.

Also, please sign the guestbook on this site, all your comments and ideas are valued.

A note for none broadband users:

This website has a lot of photographs on it, and it may take a while for slow connections to load them all.

Diesel Gala (with exceptions) 14th March 2010

Our now annual diesel gala will be back on 14th March 2010, between 1pm and 5pm.

The day will include passenger trains being hauled by all our diesels (including Vulcan and some double headers), and trains being piloted by George (our Greenbat electric loco), the Baguley (which was originally a petrol loco) and the Gogo Tractor (which is a Petrol/Paraffin loco).

Last year we had a good turnout and a very good day, and hopefully this year will be just as good if not better. The date is again the Sunday of Narrow Gauge North railway exhibition at Benton Park School, so why not combine the two for a fun filled narrow gauge day?

Thankyou to everyone who attended both the March and October 2009 diesel gala days, The October day is also set for a return in 2010, but hopefully with less rain!
