BRYANT, Robert (b. abt 1858)
Robert Bryant was interviewed by the Federal Writers’ Project in 1936-3. His narrative begins, “I was born out by Caledonia and is 75 years old. My mother came from another family. My old master bought her from another man. She died when I was about eight years old and my father died about forty years ago. His name was George Bryant but he went by de name of Brock.” Robert Bryant goes on to tell the story of how he was captured by soldiers during Price’s raid and became separated from his family for several weeks. Bryant mentions that he had a brother who was deaf and dumb and that he married four times and had children by two wives -- six girls and two boys. “Most of my children died young,” he says, “but three girls lived to get married.” The only living boy at the time of the interview is Ed McFadden, living in Fredericktown. In the rest of the interview, Bryant recalls his working life on the Mississippi, on tobacco farms, in iron foundries and former plantations. http://memory.loc.gov

BYRD, Emmett Augasta
At the age of 83, Emmett Byrd was interviewed by Miss Irene Robertson for the WPA Slave Narrative Project. He was living in Marianna, Arkansas. The narrative begins, “I was born in Washington County, MIssouri . . .” He goes on to tell how at the age of 9, during Price’s raid, a gang kidnapped him and took him to Arkansas. He didn’t see his mother again until 18 years later. He reports that his mother and father were both owned by William Byrd and his mother was Harriet Byrd’s cook. In 1872, his mother and his brother Hugh Byrd went to St. Louis. Byrd says that he is 83 at the time of the interview, which means that he was born in about 1853. The other passed through one hemisphere and both are now inside his skull. Not withstanding these wounds, from both of which the brains oozed in a considerable quantity, the negro roamed in the woods from Thursday evening till Sunday morning, when he ate a hearty meal, talked rationally, and walked three miles from the place where was captured to Potosi. Physicians, however, say he can not live. GILL, ???
1900 - Kingston 203: ??? Gill, 28; Luella, wife, 22; Joe, son, 5; Walton, son, 3; Samuel, son, 2; Alsie(?), son, 1.
1910 (Feb 10) - Potosi Journal, Vol 16, No. 24: On last Wednesday morning, (Given name not readable) Gill, a colored youth, 16 or 17 years of age, was brought to Potosi and lodged in jail, with the serious charge of attempted rape of a white woman against him. The crime took place at the home of Mrs. Chas. Clancy, near Blackwell, the night previous. Gill had been employed by Mr. Clancy about his farm for the past two years, and on the night referred to, knowing Mr. Clancy was away from home visiting his father, who was ill, he came to the house and asked for a match. As Mrs. Clancy opened the door he grappled with her. Although the woman is an invalid, just recovering from an attack of inflammatory rheumatism, she made a brave fight against the assault, at the same time pleading with the boy to remember her kindness to him in the past and not to carry out his purpose. In this way, after a struggle lasting for more than an hour, she finally prevailed upon him to desist. He then picked up a gun that was in the house and left. Mrs. Clancy at once raised an alarm among the neighbors by telephone and a posse was quickly organized to capture the young fiend. He was found at his father's home nearby making preparations to leave. He was taken to Blackwell and the news of his offense soon spread abroad, and the farmers gathered to hold an immediate lynching bee. However, by the wise advice of Judge Thomas Higginbotham and several others of the older heads, they were prevailed upon to let the law take its course, and young Gill was hostled off to jail. He will undoubtedly get a good, long term in the penitentiary.
