Washington County Marriage Book, 1865-1875 - Blacks only, with Births.
On Feb. 15, 1865, “cohabiting” free blacks were allowed to legally marry and their “reputed” children made legitimate; in each entry, after the names of the bride and groom, it states, “Negroes who have heretofore cohabited together as husband and wife while held as slaves.” The first entry in the marriage book is for Philip Langford and Francis Smith. Langford, a minister of the gospel, performed many of the subsequent marriages.
