From The Handbook of Texas Online: Greenbury (Greenberry) Logan, free black soldier in the Texas Revolution, was born a slave in Kentucky in 1799 and emancipated by his white father, David Logan. He was married to Judah Duncan and had five children when he emigrated from Missouri to Texas in February 1831. In December he received a grant of a quarter league of land on Chocolate Bayou in Austin’s third colony, now in Brazoria County, and leased a blacksmith shop on Francis Bingham’s plantation. In June 1832 he took part in the battle of Velasco. In 1834 he purchased the freedom of Bingham’s slave Caroline and married her. |

“Ralph Bunche’s great-grandfather James H. Johnson, a Baptist preacher and freedman from Virginia, married Eleanor Madden in the mid-1830’s in Missouri, then a border state between North and South, with a black population half slave and half free. Eleanor’s mother was a house slave and her father a plantation owner of Irish Catholic descent who had decreed that no child of his should be a slave. On June 29, 1842, James Johnson purchased two hundred acres of farming land in southern Illinois at public auction for $3.34 an acre. This farm, near Alton, Illinois, has remained in the family. The Johnsons had six sons and five daughters, all of whom survived to adulthood.” (Ralph Bunche: An American Life by Brian Urquhart, p. 23). Footnote: “This, and many subsequent details, are from the history of the family compiled by Bunche’s cousin Jane Taylor (nee Johnson)” (p. 459).

Jan. 13, 1852 – Solomon Guy bought the freedom of his wife Esther “aged 28 years light color and about five feet inches high” for $250 from James Sloan. Furthermore, the deed stipulates: Solomon Guy a colored man set free by Pate Buford has purchased from me his wife and two children, named Esther, Margaret, and Robert, at the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars and whereas the object of said purchase is that I shall set free the aforesaid Esther, Margaret and Robert, and whereas the said Solomon has paid me one hundred and twenty five Dollars I have set free and manumitted his wife Esther, and whereas I am not to set free the children Margaret aged 6 years and Robert aged 2 years until the balance of the money is paid and whereas I have agreed to give indulgence to the said Solomon to pay the balance of the purchase money as follows: one hundred dollars at Christmas 1852, one hundred dollars at Christmas 1853, one hundred dollars at Christmas 1854, and Seventy five dollars at Christmas 1853, now I hereby bind myself my heirs to manumit and set free the aforesaid Margaret and Robert when the said Solomon shall pay the said sum of three hundred and Seventy five dollars in installments as above set forth.
