My name is Aasiyah Qamar, and I write cultural romantic fiction with a twist. What’s the twist you may ask? Well, it’s none other than the setting and location of my stories.
Imagine white sandy beaches, crystal clear water lapping the shore in gentle waves. Imagine the light breeze of the wind in the trees, the rustle of palm leaves, and the dramatic bright blue tropical sky. The sun burns all year round and it is always warm... Paradise on Earth? No, you are in Mauritius, my home land.
“Nothing spectacular” you add then? Here’s the twist- imagine wedding proposals coming your way as soon as you hit eighteen. Imagine not being allowed out of the family house unless it is to get married, leaving a house to enter another. Imagine life rhythmed by festivals and customs and conventions. Sounds like a throw back to long-gone century? Not exactly.
This is the kind of world my heroines face day in, day out, in the actual twenty-first century. The hurdles, stumbling blocks, even the exhilaration of culture, are part and parcel of what flows from my pen.
