Livestock Guarding Dogs

Many breed fanciers claim to have the original breed going back thousands of years, but the WEBPS only claim the original working breed type (not breed). Breeds are a modern concept. Therefore, no one has an original breed, as such had never existed. The term Bulldog refers to the White English Bulldog original funtion of Alaunts - a Shepherd's dog of cattle aka Butcher's dog. But the Alaunt was much more than a LGD, it was a War Dog. Decending as a LGD of the nomadic herdsmen of the vast grasslands of Eurasia, the Alaunt is required to work with each other and all the people of the clans, especially the children. Thus, it must not be stubborn, dominate, nor aggressive, as even in battle - men, horses, and dogs work as a team. Thus is the true nature of an Old World Working Dog.

"During the European Renaissance, the Great Butcher Dog was common. This more placid mastiff helped drive cattle to market, guarding the livestock as well as the owners,..."

Interesting, the White Kazbegi Shepherd Dog is also used on cattle drives.

Since the Fence Laws in the US were enacted, a few of the White Bulldogs have been kept mainly to guard farms; while others were crossbred to create hunting dogs of wild boar and ban-dog type bullmastiffs. The original breed type is indentified by funtion. The Alaunt has always been a "working dog."

"Ahura Mazda praises the Dog as His Glorious Creation, and He created it as the guarding of the Ayrian household and farm."
