The Alaunt

The Alaunt was brought by the Alans to Europe as a Guard dog for livestock and as a war dog and is the basic breed type of the White English Bulldog. The Alaunt decends from the vast grasslands of Eurasia as a Shepherd's Dog of cattle (a word that once included all livestock) and battle. Bulldog refers to this original type cattle guarding dog. The various Shepherd's Dogs of Asia today are believed to be the oldest and puriest in form in the area of Georgia of the Cacusus Mt. This area was just south of the grasslands of the Alans, who were nomadic herdsmen in search of grazing lands. This area was also once known as Iberia, as was the original inhabitants of Spain. Some Alans reached France and Spain in 406AD, and some say they were just returning home. Another group of Alans are alive and well. http://ossetians.com/eng/news.php?newsid=371&f=3

The Passion of Bulldogs

In 1997, I bought 31 acres in Arkabutla Mississippi. I also bought 3 small size goats to help clear my land of posion ivy and kudzu. These goats were so sweet, they were eating out of my hand. In a week, 2 of the 3 goats were killed by coyotes. I vowed to have the best farm protection dog availible.

In the late 1960s, I was at a family reunion in Georgia, when my family spoke of bulldogs being the best farm dogs. I was told that bulldogs love the farm animals and would fight to the death to protect them. I was also told bulldogs were good for rounding up unruly cattle and swine. I was even told that bulldogs could be used for hunting anything from 'coons to bears. But what impressed me was that I was told a Bulldog would fight anything alone, a pack of wolves, panther, or bear to the death to defend the livestock.
