Tribute to the veterans of A Company 504 PIR in WWII

This website is a tribute to the veterans of A Company 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, who fought on Sicily, at Salerno and Cassino in 1943, at Anzio for 63 days from 22 January 1944 - April 1944. They participated in the Operation Market Garden, crossed the Waal River, captured Fort Hof van Holland and were shelled in Den Heuvel woods [Devil's Hill] east of Nijmegen in the Fall of 1944.

When the Germans launched their counter strike through the Belgian Ardennes, the men of A Company were again sent to the frontlines.  More fighting followed in the Hurtgen Forest. On April 6, 1945 A Company made a company strength patrol across the Rhine River at Hitdorf, Germany, and created a bridgehead. Then the Germans launched a counterattack....

Who is the fourth man on the picture?

After I had brought A Company veterans Leonhard Keck and David Haushalter in contact with each other after 61 years last year I thought I could never find the men on the left side of the photo below. Until a got a copy of a list of former A Company POWS with their addresses as of 1945. With that document I managed to find Charles W. Hofmeister, who is standing on the left. The man second on the left is still unknown. If you know who he is, please contact me at tuckerstroopers@live.nl

The photo was made in May 1945 in Nice (France) and signed in August 2007.

Left to right: PFC Charles W. Hofmeister, unknown, unknown Red Cross girl, SGT Leonhard Keck and PFC David L. Haushalter.
