Thailand trip 2009 Photos and Story

This is an update from our Thailand trip 21 March - 17 April 2009. We took our eldest grandson (age 14) for his first ever commercial plane ride out of Colorado, and outside the US, going all the way to Khon Kaen. The trip was a huge success, although the political climate at the time necessitated a change of plans for visiting some folks.
  • Went to the Zoo in Si Sa Ket and over to Ubon (with a chauffeur).
  • We went up to Nong Khai where we took some pictures of the Mekong River (see photo albums page on this site).
  • We made it to the King Cobra Village of Thailand near Nam Phong and placed some footage on You Tube (see the video page on this site).
  • We spent quite a bit of time around Khon Kaen and I found out that mostly all structural evidence of our military presence at Camp Khon Kaen (Hawsip Kilowatt) is no longer there.
  • Received treatment on my shoulder injury with local Thai Massage therapists (torture and pain for me), yet the end result was more mobility.
  • We drove by the old air base at Udorn, spotted the gate but didn't recognize much of anything else.
  • On the way to and from Bangkok, we passed through Pak Chong and the entrance to the old ammo bunkers.
  • Saw a tiny radio antenna on top of a mountian overlooking the national park just outside of Suriburi.
We stayed at a couple of Bangkok hotels (The Queens Garden Resort Hotel upon arriving, and the Grand Inn Come Hotel on the way out). Both were good places to stay and close to the new airport.

We're back home in Colorado Springs, CO and getting geared up for the 24 - 27 June 2010 reunion in Colorado Springs. We managed to pickup a few items to be offered as door prizes and/or givaways to the first 30 or so attendees. Start making plans now to attend and visit our reunion 2010 page on this site for more information.

THAILAND 2010 - NO PLANS AT THIS TIME

The 519th Transportation Association, Thailand is no longer considering a trip to Thailand in 2010. However if you are interested, contact an individual tour contractor and take advantage of all there is to do in Thailand. The hottest time of the year is during our summer. The coolest time of the year is our winter. Consult a travel agent to get specific costs and to make your reservations. For a party of two, plan on $5,000 to cover travel and incidental expenses. - Truck
