What is a Veteran?
Much has been said and written about what or who is a "Veteran". I'd like to take the word "Veteran" down to what I feel is its basic ingredient.
A Veteran is someone who has answered the call to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States of America by taking the following oath:
“I,
(name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend
the
Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and
domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I
will obey the orders of the
President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed
over me, according to regulations and the
Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.[1]
”
Veterans come from all walks of life, and every corner of the globe.
Most are US citizens, many become US citizens, or they serve and die before that process is completed, while many are still waiting to come home.

Those who didn't return we call POW's or MIA's
Those who die for their country we call Heroes.
Those who served are called Veterans.
All Veterans are Patriots.
Not all Patriots are Veterans.

I first took that oath at the Armed Forces Entrance and Examining Station in Boise, Idaho on September 13, 1967 and repeated that oath five times before retiring from active military service on December 31, 1990. I did not then, nor do I now take that oath lightly.
