[I was with the 561st Engineering company in Korat in November, 1963.  In January, we moved down to Kanchanaburi to assist the 809th Battalion in building the Bangkok bypass highway.  I just returned from a 17 day trip to Thailand.  It sure has changed in 46 years.

I arrived in Camp Vayama in the fall of 1966 with the 499th Transportation Batallion Headquarters group.  Served there until the fall of 1967.  Worked in S2/S3 operations and later worked at the pier running the tide monitoring shack that was hanging off the end of the delong pier.  Used to travel up to pataya on weekend passes.  One of our guys got temporary duty there as a clerk typists so he always had has a place to stay.  I remember watching old movies outside with sheets of painted plywood proped against light poles.

Made lots of good friends but have lost contact with all of  them over the years.  There was Les Heugatter, Michael Walraven, Wendall Connally just to name a few.  I also new Sgt Jenkins and Major Howard, I actually drove for Major Howard for a while until my old chevy nova with the steering column on the right side kept hanging up in gear so he fired me as his driver.  Best thing ever happened to me.

I want everyone to take a look at our HR 2254 Agent Orange Equity Act of 2009 page. It has a current listing of sponsors (updated frequently). I have recently sent a letter to Colorado Congressman Doug Lamborn encouraging him to get on board as a co-sponsor of this important piece of legislation. I ask everyone to do likewise with your state congressional representative. Thanks - Joe - Truck

Just dropped in to say the site is looking great. Thanks for adding me. My e-mail address is (samap2@charter.net. ) I was stationed at HHC 44Th Engineer Group, Korat.. and then came back in the second time living in the Prince Hotel for the last 6 months. I hope all is well. I have often thought about this "boots on the ground" thing! Does that mean if you had a stay over in route to our bases in Thailand and have a "pay stub" with: CZ, CZE would that be proof of tour of duty in Vietnam. Can we clarify that so it would help everyone.

Thanks to all who made this site possible. I was in Thailand from mid-January 1967 to late December 1967 and resided in tent city at Camp Vayama, near Sattahip. The official government record for my unit, the 229th TC, begins on April 30th, 1967 and ends the following year. Thirty-two years later, following two years of Congressional support, I was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and Campaign Ribbon.

We were an advisory group of less than 30 troops. We moved mountain tops, built and stacked bomb pads, extended the one and only portable runway at U-tapo AFB and moved bombs / naplm for the first 3 B-52s which showed up in April 67 from Guam. The raw natural beautiful culture of Thailand , its people and my relationships with my comrades, remain a special part of my life's experiences. I would like to hear hear from those who served in Thailand.

Got your site info while browsing on Togetherweserved. I served two tour in Thailand. The first with the 281st MP CO. Camp Samesan. Can't remember the dates will have to dig out my orders. Anyway was there late spring or early summer of 72 thru the same time frame of 73. Came back in 74 to Bangkok and served with the 13th MP CO. Left during the draw down in 76. Like the site. Hope all you truckers don't mind an old MP joining up. I pray that all the years have been good to all of you and to your families.

Jim, YES you are a Vietnam Veteran (not Vietnam Era). If you were Army in Thailand, you were under United States Army Support, Thailand (one way or another).

Your DD214 should have the Vietnam Service Medal (VSM) and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device (RVCM) annotated on it. Go to the Army Together We Served website @ http://army.togetherweserved.com/, create a profile (register) and on the home page there are links to request your military records. (They will send you basically enlistment, reenlistment and discharge paperwork upon request. It takes several weeks, but that's a place to start). - Truck
