Terrier is Tamora Pierce’s most recent addition to the realm of Tortall and the first book in the Rebakah Cooper Trilogy. Over the years Pierce has built up many loved characters, but in this new story it brings readers back two centuries to focus on Alanna the Lioness’s husband, George’s, ancestor.
George Cooper used to be head of the thieves until he married Alanna. ‘Beka’ Cooper just so happen to be on the opposite side of the law as part of the Provost’s Guard (policemen).
Beka grew up with her family in the worst part of town for eight years. After the man Beka’s mom had been dating beat her, Beka tracks down the man and his gang’s hiding place. By reporting him to the Lord Provost, who was in trouble because he could not capture this particular gang, then took in the family and got them higher paying jobs. The Lord Provost notice Beka’s loved to work on the force and she soon becomes his new protégée.
In this first book in the trilogy it tells of Beka’s first year on the force as a ‘puppy’ or trainee. After not training a puppy for several years two experienced senior ‘Dogs’, Mattes Tunstall and Clary Goodwin, are force to take on Beka and train her. Tunstall funny and easy going but he’s fierce in combat, while Goodwin is a tough women who clearly never wanted a puppy and most certainly does not want to training one. One character veteran Pierce readers will recognize is a little black companion named Pounce, who is very smart and sticks with Beka where ever she goes.
Beka has a rare gift and with discovers the truth of two horrible ongoing mysterious. She must convince Tunstall and Clary that she knows what she talking about if she wants to stop more people from dieing.
This story written in first person compared to previous Pierce books, written in third person, takes a new turn into the realm of Tortall. It’s a different time period, one where lady knights were common unlike in Alanna’s time. Plus the city is different from past stories.
Readers will enjoy this book because just like many of Pierce’s books you can pick it up without having read any previous books based in this realm. Those, though, who don’t start from the beginning do miss out on small connections and inside jokes. Review by Athletic Fantisist
I thought this book was excellent. Apparantly I'm not the only one because it's being made into a movie. Some people say this book is too gothic due to vampires or too mature for a young audience. If I could curse at them I would- but I won't- I mean even Emily Osment, Whoopi Goldberg, and Kaleb Nation (Kaleb is currently still reading it) have read it. I've already reread Twilight 4 times and have convinced 3 of my other friends to read it. It's not all about vampires it's so romantic. The movie is in theaters December 12, 2008.
