History

Kampong  Glam was very much a muslim community in the past. it was the area where the fisrt Arabs and Malays settled.

Origin

"Kampong" in Malay simply means village and while there has been some disagreement on how "Glam" was derived. This could have meant the gypsies that used to live in the area, or fromthe Glam trees that existed in the area. the Malays had been living in Singapore long before the Chinese and Indians settled in here. Most parts of the Kampong Glam has been renovated to retain the architectural heritage. there are a lot of shops and eateries offering Malay, Indonesian and Indian delights around Kampong Glam. Glam Trees
. Glam trees are found in Kampong Glam. Medicinal oil was extracted from the tree and its bark used by the Buginese and Malays to caulk their ships. 030404 115   This is the bark of the glam tree.
