There were several teams who I thought really set themselves back with their drafts:1. Tennessee TitansGood Picks: Lavelle Hawkins was a good value in the 5th round (I had him going in the 3rd round) and, more importantly, THE TITANS FINALLY DRAFTED A WR!!!Bad Picks: One of the worst picks of the entire draft was Chris Johnson. Johnson is speedy, the Titans already have Chris Henry, and Johnson was a huge reach. If there is any pick that was worse then the Johnson pick, it was the Titans taking William Hayes. No one has ever heard of this guy, and, HE WASN'T A WR!!! Idiots. 2. Baltimore RavensGood Picks: Ray Lewis won't be back after his contract expires, and Tavares Gooden was a good value pick. Bad Picks: Sure the Ravens needed a QB, but Joe Flacco was a reach for sure at 18. Furthermore, he is a project, but he will probably have to start pretty early. was a reach somewhat, and, they didn't need a safety. Tom Zbikowski. Marcus Smith and Justin Harper were late round picks, but didn't really need a WR, and neither of them should have been drafted. Most of all, THE RAVENS DIDN'T TAKE A CB!!! Samari Rolle has nothing left, and Chris McAllister is a very old player who can't have much left.
1. Kansas CityGood Picks: Glenn Dorsey has injury problems, but he also has tremendous talent. Brandon Albert will most likely end up an excellent guard, but if he pans out at left tackle, then he will be a great value and need pick. Will Franklin was a physical and speedy receiver I was very high on. By picking him, they can give Dwanye Bowe a complement and Brodie Croyle another weapon to work with.Bad Picks: DeJuan Morgan is a good player, but doesn't fill one of the Chiefs many needs. The same goes for Jamaal Charles. Brad Cottam has injury questions, and no track record. He is a big reach in the third round.Grade: A-2. New York Giants Good Picks: Kenny Phillips was a good pick at the end of round one to fill the hole Gibril Wilson's departure left. Terrell Thomas is a physical corner, although selecting him over Dan Connor is a questionable decision. To nobody's surprise, I liked their selection of this draft's best QB, Andre Woodson, in the 6th round.Bad Picks: Robert Henderson was a 6th round pick, but that was still a wasted pick. Mario Manningham was a questionable pick, as he has character problems, won't do well with Tom Caughlin, and doesn't really fill a position of need.Grade: A3. CincinnatiGood Picks: Keith Rivers was probably the Bengals last resort, but he is still a tenacious defender who will greatly improve their rag-tag crew of linebackers. Pat Sims was, at one time, a first round prospect, so the Bengals got great value by selecting him in the third round. He is raw, but he can learn from, then replace, veteran John Thornton. Corey Lynch, an excellent athlete, can fill the void left by Maideu Williams' departure. Andre Caldwell was good value in the third round, although the Bengals had already selected Jerome Simpson in the 2nd round.Bad Picks: I still have no idea why the Bengals selected Jason Shirley. He is another character-concern player, and the Bengals already picked Pat Sims earlier in the draft. Mario Urratia has even more character concerns, and he was the third receiver the Bengals took in the 2008 draft. Jerome Simpson was a major reach in the 2nd round, especially when you consider that Andre Caldwell, Early Doucet, DeSean Jackson, and other higher-rated receiver were still available.Grade: A-
In a move that surprised absolutely no one, the 49ers reunited Mike Martz and Iaasc Bruce by signing the latter to a 2 year deal. Bruce will be a big upgrade over the receivers we have right now on the field, but he may have more impact off the field. Bruce knows Martz's system, and he can teach it to the other receivers and the rest of the offensive players. This may not seem like much until you realize how complex Martz's system is. On the field, Bruce should be a solid but not spectacular source of production as the team's 2nd or 3rd receiver.
