I have been sailing for years ( 40 plus ), and when I have to anchor or stay at the dock I could not get the wind into the cabin. Every time the wind changed or the current ( tide ) changed I had to go on deck to move the wind scoop that I had to face the wind so I could get air in the cabin again and so on. I knew that there was a way. I just wish that I could have figured it out 20 years ago .
Well, anyway in July of 2006, with my old sewing machine. I started making a wind scoop. The only one I had at the time was a one sided one. Yes the one you have to move around. That is how the three sided one came about. It was so simple. Three sides, the panels can be wide and with a round top on it, the wind will push against the top and be forced down. With out the round top or a square one if you like a square!, the wind would just do what it will ( go where it wants to up and away ) and not down. I knew I could channel the air and I did . I made it to fit any standard hatch on a sailboat. It doesn’t need any fittings , all you need to do is hook your jib halyard to the loop on the top and put the three wooden or fiber glass rods inside the hatch, then pull up on the halyard and it’s done. But to keep it up right I put a extra line from the loop at the top where the halyard connects to the wind scoop and tied it of to the forestay. This way it will be vertical. As long as you have wind, ( I’m not talking about a light breeze ), you will get air inside the boat. It works so well I got a patent for it.
