Many of the men who mustered in to the Third Regiment Maine Infantry at Augusta in June, 1861, were lumbermen from the Kennebec River area. They served three years, and in the course of battles from Bull Run to Cold Harbor lost nearly as many men in combat as to disease: 10 officers and enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded in action; 1 officer and 124 enlisted men to disease. Those with time left to serve when the Regiment mustered out in June, 1864, transferred to the Seventeenth Regiment Maine Infantry.
