A very successful race night was held on Friday 9th May to raise sponsorship money for the event. A fantastic turnout, helped no end by the fantastic weather, meant the team raised almost £1,400 on the night alone. With other money already pouring in and other events planned we should be able to break the £2k mark in the next week or so and move onwards and upwards.
A big thank you to everyone who came along to support and to the team for organising the event.
For Tony's birthday on Saturday 9th of February (as a special treat) a small group of us took another trip to Snowdon for a little bit of reconnaissance.
Tony, Craig, Marc and Mark went to have a look at a slightly different route up the mountain which they believed would be a little quicker. Although covering more distance the first part of the route was much flatter along the 'Miner's Track', this route took us along a number of lakes which provided some fantastic views on what was a very clear day. After this relatively easy start we faced a short but very steep climb up the base of Snowdon to join the Pyg track which we took last year. This steep incline was a little tricky as we couldn't actually fine the path; not put off, we split into 2 pairs and simply climbed up the shale to re-join the Pyg. This short amount of pain resulted in a huge leap up the mountain which in the end saved us 15 minutes of ascent time.
It turned out that from above the path was actually easy to spot but it turned out that our make-shift short cut was faster than the marked track. This was a valuable learning experience for the big day as we have decided that this will be the route we take then.
All in all it was a brillint day, conditions were 100% better than the last time we went up and from the summit we had spectacular views which stretched past Holyhead into the Irish Sea.
Next plans are for a group trip to Scarfell in late Feb/early March and Tony is going to try and get up to Ben Nevis in the next fortnight for a go at the one mountain none of us have attempted yet. This will be vital in terms of working out timings for the final run as Nevis will undoubtedly be the one mountain we need to 'gain' a bit of time on as it will be the only mountain we attempt in the daylight whilst full of energy.
Now 2008 is upon us the support team have exploded into action and the fundraising has really begun now. In January the support team made a presentation to Alaistar Darby, the MD of Marston's Beer Company. This presentation was very useful as they have gained a lot if good ideas and avenues within the other divisions of Marston's to increase our profile and to raise sponsorship.
Later in February Jackie and some of the team will make a visit to the PR company used by Marson's who are going to help with our marketing strategy.
