History
The 34th North Carolina was mustered into service on October 25, 1861, at High Point, NC, with a strength of 746 officers and men. The Regiment was assigned to General Alfred M. Scales' brigade in Pender's division of A.P. Hill's corps. it was heavily engaged in the major battles of the Army of northern Virginia, perhaps most notably at Gettysburg, where it took part in Pickett's Charge. The 34th had 310 engaged in the charge, suffering a twenty-one percent casualty rate. At Appomattox only one hundred sixty-eight members of the regiment were still present to recieve parole.
