House Plants for the Black Thumb

On this page you will find house plants that are great for people who have black thumbs just like me!  I have always loved plants but could never seem to grow them without killing them.  I mean I even killed a Cactus for petes sake!    So through my trial and error you will find the best plants for those of us who don't really know what we're doing.  Or are forgetful about watering our plants.

HAPPY PLANTING & GROWING!

Tips

A helpful website I use is: www.thegardenhelper.com

It is always helpful to rotate your plants in and out of the sun (window) every other day for best results.

The Pink Polka Dot Plant

The Pink Polka Dot Plant - Hypoestes Phyllostachya - Non Flowering

Beautiful Plant and easy care.  Bright Light but not full sun.  Best in humid enviroment, mist plant. Soil Slightly moist. Water w/unclorinated water ( fill watering can the night b/f & chlorine will disapate ). Can prune w/o harm to plant. Root the cuttings to make new plants (this is awesome). If desired when the plant is showing active growth dilute 1/2 strength liquid houseplant fertilizer. ( I don't do this ). When needed repot in the spring w/ new potting soil.

My Way: Keep soil moist, I water about 1-3 days depending on soil moisture.  Rotate in and out of window light every other day.  All I do is get up in the morning check soil wetness and I have a Coffee stand at the end of the couch that sits in front of the window, and I rotate the plants between this stand and the other stand thats not at the window.  If the soil is dry I water the plants and mist them.  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO PRUNE YOUR PLANTS!  This helps the plants stay alive, it keeps the nutrients going to the live portions of the plants.  This plant is great b/c you can take the clippings and make new plants with them.  You don't have to spend more money for new plants.

Wandering Jew Plant

Wandering Jew Plant - Non Flowering

Much like the pink polka dotted plant.  Easy Care.  I particularly like this one b/c of the purple in it.  It can be pruned back w/o any harm to the plant, this picture was taken right after the pruning.  The clipping can be potted to make new plants.  The hanging basket is beside of a window.  The smaller plant made from it's clippings gets rotated in and out of the window on the coffee table about every other day.  Mist plants and water them when soil is dry about every 3-4 days.

This picture is the clippings that I potted to make the new wandering jew plant.  You can see the purple better in this picture.
