Prelude

She gazed into the sunset, head cocked to one side, chin slightly raised, wondering if she would ever see him again.  He had been her savior, her mentor, her friend, and now she had lost him.  She had been so happy and now all she felt was sorrow.  It was overwhelming, the agony, she never knew one being could make her feel so alive, yet so dead.  She looked down the hill, at the slain dying demons, and a fury grew in her heart.  The red blood stained everything, the grass, the demons, her clothes, her hands . . .  She had searched, through bodies so she could give him a proper burial.  He wasn't there, nor was the cloaked figure.

He had trained her for four years, teaching her everything she knew.  It was because of him that she stood a chance against the world.  He had given so much to her, and then, when he needed her the most, she didn't come through.  The wind whisped by and she thought that she heard a far off noise.  Her pointed ears pricked up for a moment, wondering, but the noise had stopped, and she resumed her melancholy pose.  She thought back to that fateful day when it had all started . . .

Chapter 1 : The End

She had been a child of 14 when he came to her, first in her dreams then in her reality.  She remembered his jet black hair with a streak on the left side, how his voice, still in her dreams, had given her hope in desperate times.  Her village was one of many under attack by the venomous Koji Demons.  The Ochibo had told them that Val, the Shadow Lord, was fighting once more for the world of Kodazhir.  All the children had been told to stay in their huts at night, no matter what happened outside.

It was late in the cloud strewn night when she heard his voice.  At first she thought it was just another dream but then she was softly shaken awake.  When she first saw him, crouching over her, she determined him to be not much older than herself, 16 or 17 at the most.  He was taller than her and was surrounded by a dark aura of mystery.  He was strong and broad shouldered, with three red scars across his right cheek.  He wore a black cape that fell to his feet and was clasped at the neck with an octarine pin.  He had dark forest green pants, bunched slightly at the knee. A glove on one hand, a leather band on the wrist of the other.  His shirt was a deep navy blue, fur collar flared slightly, a velvet cord served as a belt.  He had two pauldrons jutting out over his shoulders, each adorned with a sphere of protection. Last but not least was an octarine necklace of a dragon figurine perched upon a small dagger.

"Come," he said softly. Rael, for that was her name, looked up at him in question.  After a long moment, she slowly raised her palm.  He pulled her up and led her, by the hand out of the hut.

"I want to show you something."

She nodded as he led her out of camp.  Somehow, she felt safe when she was with him.  As they walked, she noticed for the first time the twin sabers strapped across his back.  She walked further from her home than she had ever been before. They were up into the densely wooded region of Mount Drakn.  They began to finally slow.  He pushed through some branches, into a grove of trees and pulled her close behind.

     She gasped, "It's, it's beautiful!"

Rael raised her hands above her head and turned slowly in circles before finally spiraling to the ground.  She took in the wondrous scenery that lay before her eyes.  It was a small yet beautiful waterfall cascading down from a cliff of marble. There was a large, tree of a type that she didn't know directly beneath the silky water.  The water was dripping off of each branch, twig, and white flower.  The roots of the tree formed an island in the midst of the serene pool surrounding it.  The water in the pool was crystal clear, and she could see small fish swimming below the surface.

     "This is where I live."

He stepped through the waterfall underneath an overhanging branch. Curious, Rael followed.

A cave was hidden behind the churning water, decorated with a very strange collection of artifacts.  The first thing Rael noticed was a large oak bookcase on the far wall.  It was filled with numerous leather bound volumes.  She noticed that there were strange symbols on the spines that she couldn't understand.  Her eyes traveled along the wall to a set of three birch shelves with a maple desk underneath.  The most peculiar objects were placed on the shelves.  Spheres, cubes, gem studded carvings and other such items, these too were adorned with symbols.  On the desk were a few scattered pieces of paper, a small blue book, a glass ink bottle, and a quill. Against the left most wall was the bedding.  A soft under cushion of leaves and moss was topped with two furs and a stuffed cloth bag at the head.  Next were two cloaks hanging from eaves in the wall.  On the opposite side of the cave were many weapons, all hanging from hooks made of antlers.  There were swords, maces, bows axes and many other less popular arsenal.  A large fire pit was in the center of the room filled with ashes and half burnt logs.

She walked, interested, over to the shelves and gingerly picked up a small wooden rod.

"Ah!" she cried and quickly tossed the rod back onto the shelf.  "It burned me," she said hastily as she jammed her fist into her mouth.  After she had sufficiently relieved the pain, she questioned, "Who are you anyway?  And for that matter why did I follow you?"

Speaking for only the fourth time, he said, with a smile playing at his lips, "You may call me, Tauron.  As for why you came here . . . because I wished you to."

"Wished me to," said Rael, beginning to feel suspicious, "are you some sort of a mage?"

"Well you could say that . . ." he said glancing into her questioning eyes. "Don't you trust me?"

"Oh I trust you," sighed Rael, "though I'm not quite sure why."

     "Here, why don't you -"

"AUGH!"cried Rael in anguish.  She collapsed onto the bedding and rubbed her throbbing temples.  "What's, what's happeni -"

*Flash*
     Screams. Running. Demons.

     "Oh god, please no! Augh!"

     "Help! Somebody help us all!"

No, NO! Pain. Blood. Blood everywhere. Fire.
*Flash*

Rael opened her eyes and gasped for breath, she was back in the cave.  "I - I have to go  - something bad - happen in - village," she called back to Tauron, for she was already sprinting through the waterfall.

She ran through the forest, hoping that her premonition wasn't true.  Her long wet hair plastered across her face, masking her vision, and every now and then she had to push it out of her eyes.  She began to run even faster as she saw smoke rising above the tree tops.

     "No, please no . . ."

As she reached the bottom of the hill, her longing eyes grasped for the village she knew and loved, but in her heart she knew it was too late.

The village was devastated, parts of it still burning.  Slowly, not wanting to believe what she saw, Rael walked down the bloody streets.  There, that had been the trade house, where kind old Haldren had given her candy harvest days.  And, and the park where she played when she was young.  On her left was the scholar's tree, its branches lay scorched and dying on the ground.  She came to her own hut, all that was left was a smoldering pile of rubble.

     "Grrrrrraaghhrr"

Rael whirled around to come face to face with a grinning Koji Demon.  It was of the fire clan, and it stared at her with its coal black eyes.  It crouched on all fours, its mane flaming in the light of blaze.  Its tail lashed from side to side, it too was on fire.  It had two curved black horns jutting out from just beyond its jaw bones.  It's teeth were a glinting pure white, and its head weaved from side to side.

She walked slowly backwards, fearing she would meet the same fate as her village.  Sharp, poison filled claws protruded from its fiery paws.  It bared its teeth, flattened its ears, and pounced.

Strangely unafraid, Rael glared defiantly into its eyes.  It was in midair when there was a flash of curved silver, and it fell to the ground, in pieces.  Kneeling behind was Tauron.  His arms were thrust backwards, and he had a saber in each hand, pointed perfectly forwards.  His head was bowed.  In one swift move, he stood up, spun the swords twice and then sheathed them elegantly, all the time keeping his head bowed.

Rael felt a sharp pain in her left leg.  She looked down, and realized that the Koji Demon must have scratched her on its way down, for she was bleeding profusely.  She felt her mind slow, her eyes waver, as she fell to the ground.  She barely felt his hands catching her . . .
