A lifetime journey to happiness

"And I will not give in. I will conquer this [marathon] and I will conquer it alone." John Bingham

I love quotes that help to keep me motivated and inspired. John Bingham "Penguin" is truly my inspiration and I would love the opportunity to meet him someday but for now I will settle for reading all his books and writings.

"If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience another life, run a marathon. It's just developing the attitude that nothing can stop you. For all of us, the miracle isn't that we finish, the miracle is that we have the courage to start. Having that ripped ab look becomes increasingly immaterial as you run those last six miles in the marathon; your only goal is making it to the finish line one way or another. There is no such thing as an average runner. We are all above average. The word 'cannot' should be removed from the vocabulary of all marathoners. We compete against ourselves, not against others."

"The question is not why I'm doing it. The question is why aren't you doing it too?
Even the latest finishers aren't back of the packers. They're the back of the front. Still among the elite 1/10th of 1% of Americans who can and DO finish the marathon. The challenge in running is not to aim at doing the things no one else has done, but to keep doing things anyone could do, but most never will."

"At least 99% of running is just showing up. Getting out there and putting one foot in front of the other."

The marathon: Pain is certain, Suffering is optional."

"The marathon: How an average runner becomes more than average."

"Our running shoes are really erasers. Every step erases some past failure. Every mile brings us closer to a clean slate. Each foot strike rubs away a word, a look, or an event which led us to believe that success was beyond our grasp."
