Few TV series ever achieve cult TV status and fewer cult TV programmes are featured in other cult TV programmes. Doctor Who and the Clangers however have the distinction of being one if the unlikely exceptions to this as a sequence from the Clangers episode “The Rock Collector” forms part of the televised entertainment for Doctor Who’s arch enemy the Master - locked away in his island prison cell - in the first episode of the “The Sea Devils”. The episode was first broadcast on the 26th
February 1972 and incidentally features the most bizarre synthesised soundtrack.
In it the Master (Rodger Delgado) appears amused by the Clangers antics and is clearly seen attempting to emulate their whistling. He is also apparently unaware of their true nature, as the following dialogue between him and his foolish and bungling jailer, Colonel George Trenchard (Clive Morton) illustrates:
Trenchard: “What are you watching.”
The Master: “It seems to be a rather interesting extraterrestrial life form.”
Trenchard: “Only puppets you know.”
Trenchard: “For Children.”
The Master: “Oh... Phh”.
