Circa 2005
For several years I had been looking for a 1967 Chevelle project car. I had a 67 Malibu back in the early 80s when I was going to A&P school in eastern Massachusetts, and had wanted another one since I got rid of mine when I needed a more dependable car.
You know the story, marriage, mortgage, kids all put those plans on hold for several years. With my daughter in college, and my son graduating high school next year, I thought it would be several more years before I could start a project like that.
I finally decided one day that it was now or never. After looking for more than a year, and finding cars that were either too much money, or too far gone to restore, I found a 67 Malibu sport coupe on EBay that looked promising. After a few emails and phone calls, I was the proud owner of one 67 Malibu needing alot of work. I drove down to Long Island and hauled it home in September of 2005.
My plan is to do a full frame off restoration on the car, making it into an SS clone. I don't plan on making it a 100% correct SS copy, but more of an SS done my way.
The reason I didn't get a real SS is that I would like to do some performance modifications to the car, and don't want to chop up or modify a real SS from stock. I want to build a fun street car that might see a little dragstrip time.
I plan to install a 427 Big Block with a 4 speed Muncie and a 12 bolt. I purchased a 427 Big Block and Muncie 4 speed in April 2006 (See "Powertrain" page for details). I'll probably install the 10 bolt until I can find a 12 bolt to fit my needs (i.e. cheap). The car will appear to be a stock SS when complete.
I'll be replacing the quarter panels, floors, trunk floor, rocker panels, and anything else that needs it.
I plan on rebuilding the suspension, installing big block front coil springs, and converting to disc brakes. I'll do a full mechanical restoration on the car, replacing all brake lines, fuel lines, and other components.
This will be a long term project, as money and time permit.
