A Night Out With the Stars

Following the cancellation of the summer bivouac due to flooding, Friday 7th November was set as the date for the scout bivi, followed by the next Rombald’s Stride training walk on the Saturday.

The weather on Friday had seemed innocent enough until about 5.00 pm when the heavens opened and the rain started. The usual Friday scout meeting took place and 13 hardy souls stayed on for the sleep over. Happily, shelters were built in the dry, this proved only to be a break in the rain for come 11 o’clock and time to turn in the rain started again and this time with a wind* that flattened the first of the shelters within 10 minutes, forcing the occupiers to seek more robust accommodation within half an hour. The period of wind and rain forced the majority of wild campers into the scout hut within 3 to 4 hours. Only one scout managed to survive the whole night out in the wilds – well done to that man!

As the noise from the scout hut was incessant by 5.45 am it was decided to make a start on walk 4 of the Rombald’s training plan. Come 7.10 am 11 scouts and 2 leaders were on their way up the Chevin, dropping down to Otley and following the old railway to Burley. The route continued across Hawksworth Moor, returning to Guiseley via Low Spring. The group completed the 10.5 mile and returned to the scout hut at the fashionable late time of 1.45 pm. Some were muddy, but all were tired after their exercise and night in the wilds. Home and the settee seemed like a good idea.

PLs & APLs Camp

PLs & APLs Camp 2007

Friday 31st August to Sunday 2nd September was the Patrol leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders weekend camp, this year at Sconce. It proved to be a fun weekend of walking, navigation exercises, pioneering and camp cooking.

The challenge for Friday evening was to get to the campsite and put up the tents before dark, this was just about achieved.

Saturday was  bit more of a challenge as everyone had to muck in to cook breakfast for their group – difficult for those that weren’t quite sure which end of a tin of beans to open. After breakfast brought the task of making a suitable flagpole, mission accomplished lashings were practiced on a pioneering project.

After the scouts practiced packing their own lunch the moors were visited for an afternoon of walking and navigation. No one got lost and the whole group returned to camp for evening meal preparation, everybody cooked and everybody washed up. The promised mild chilli turned out to be rather more fiery than expected, but no one went hungry. Later the campsite was explored by torchlight along with the Haworth cubs campfire – thanks for the invite. Lights out seemed to come as a bit of a relief after the exercise of the day.

Sunday, up and breakfast again, a bit less of a challenge today, though the washing up was. After Scouts Own, striking the camp and tidying up took place. The afternoon involved walking back to the scout hut. Typically the weather turned and the scouts arrived back after possible the first wash of the weekend. Nobody complained they had had a bad time, so this must be looked upon as a success.
