Disaster Preparedness is the third major program of the 14A27 Crime Information Network.

In a major disaster the fire and police departments will be overwhelmed.  They will not respond to our needs.  We will be on our own.  In fact, with the power out, telephone, cellphones, and internet down we will not be able to even call for fire and police help.  The only solution is personal preparedness.

Contrary to popular belief, the Northridge Earthquake, 1994, was not "The Big One" (a major earthquake).  We need to be prepared for at least a Hurricane Katrina (2004) style disaster, either caused by nature or by man (terrorism).   Within five minutes of  the Northridge earthquake all 104 fire stations in Los Angeles were fully committed.  Five fire houses had severe structural damage and were out of service.  The firefighters had to deal with their own injuries and damaged fire house before they help others.  In The Big One roads will be buckled, live power lines will be downed, trees and light poles will fall and block roadways.  Even if every police officer and firefighter in the country came to LA to help, how many days or weeks will it take them to get through the impassible roads to get us?  Personal preparedness is the answer.  Once we and our families are prepared we need to work prepare our neighbors.  They are the ones who can help us - if they are trained.

We sponsor the CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) course which teaches neighbors the practical skills they need to survive a disaster, i.e. how to put out a fire, how to excauvate someone trapped in a collapsed building after an earthquake, how to do triage and first aid.   The course is offered free.  Please visit:
