1220 ditches jazz for 'bootskin rock'
April 30, 2004
As a quintet of high-school juniors, local rock group 1220 is miles ahead of the majority of other starry-eyed high school acts. While most bands that age emulate the latest trend to hit MTV2, 1220 bases its style on undeniable classics to produce the purest form of untainted rock 'n' roll.
Originally assembled as a jazz band, the founding members of 1220 could not discount their love of rock, and they converted after six months, discarding six drummers along the way before arriving at their current lineup. |
"We'd planned on playing some jazz together, but we found rock 'n' roll was a lot more exciting," says bassist Albert Murrian.
Now the band has 3 1/2 years of rock under its belt and has honed its songwriting process to a T. 1220 produces a sound communally referred to as "bootskin rock," a style described as guitar-driven rock similar to the band's major influences the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Well-suited to this style are the vocals of frontman Jacob Gibson, whose voice resembles Axl Rose's in its extreme moments, and occasionally even that of Beulah's Miles Kurosky.
"We listen to all kinds of music, and all those kinds of musics have different kinds of things that make them appealing to different people," explains Gibson. "We listen to rock, we listen to country, we listen to folk, we listen to classical, and all of these things find their way into our songwriting. I think it's that mix that makes us appeal in a very different way to a lot of people."
"We focus on our songwriting a lot," adds Murrian. "The rest of the music revolves around that. It's not based on solos like a jam band. The songs are very formatted and straightforward."
Although 1220 has but one release so far to its name (an untitled, two-song EP recorded at Middle Tennessee State University), the group frequently schedules live shows. In the collective opinion of the band, it is live performance that separates the weak from the strong. This feeling bodes well for the group as it makes habitual appearances in high-school battles of the bands.
"We enjoy playing live very much, and I think that comes across," points out guitarist Alex Trammell. "It's not solely based on playing loud and fast, but we do like to put some energy into it."
Gibson adds, "What I find exciting is taking songs that you wouldn't normally think would come across as energetic live and then making them that way." Today at 4:30 p.m., 1220 takes the stage at West High School's Weststock 2004. Other acts lined up for the event include Tensoft, Daphne, Oedipus, Shakedown Toast, the Literal Image, Kingsize, Fingerlickin' and Little Rubber Coat. The show costs $5 and admits all ages. This year's Weststock will serve as an opportunity to behold the next generation of musicians to hit the Knoxville scene. With teary eyes, we can all watch with pride as these little shavers mature into the area's next full-fledged, big-name rockers. |
